Pioneer DVD Maintenance

I have a Pioneer - I think 117 - slot DVD and since it gets used pretty often I was wondering what would be the best way to clean and maintain? Do I use the same head cleaning discs that they sell for regular DVD players? I'm kind of leery of that because I know someone who did and afterwards the DVD in his PC was considerably noisier, even though it still worked. Any suggestions?
