I bought a used system (Athlon AMDK7/500; OS Win98) with a Pioneer drive (DVD-114). It will read audio/data CDs, but not DVDs. I believe there must be some driver files missing. Anyone with experience using the Pioneer drives, please advise me of a way to check my system for the appropriate files. I do not have the original installation disc(s) that came with the drive.

Will it not read data DVDs or movies or both. To play movies, you need software like PowerDVD or WinDVD both of which are available in OEM versions at on-line stores for $10. or less (9software.com is one). Some video cards also come with DVD player software. The software DVD players mentioned above usually work best if the video card offers some DVD support (acceleration) but your machine should be able to play well without it.
. Optical drives generally don't need "drivers". Just needs software that "knows" how to use their features.

It may not be the best, but some movies have software On the DVD that will try to install if you don't have an application to run the movie on the computer. (It'll try to install even if you do have a player.)
So are you saying it won't play a movie or that Windows won't even show it has a DVD in it under "My Computer"?
