Originally Quoted from cdfreaks.com:
Pioneer has demonstrated dual layer burning during the CES, the technology exhibition in Las Vegas.
Intresting however is that the company used a Pioneer A06 burner with only a modified firmware. According to the company only a firmware modification is needed in order to make a DVD-R drive write dual layer discs.
So if this works, will our authoring programs have to be 'dual-layer' compatable? (Adobe Encore and others)

I suspect you'll need dual layer disks and dual layer software.

I guess you'll be able to copy DVD movies perfectly...

Any DVD authoring software that's worth anything will be able to do a dual-layered disc.

I'm just trying to guess the cost of a dual-layer disc......... and how difficult it would be the make them. Technologically speaking, its quite impressive.

everything I've read indicates that the price of a dual-layer disc should/will be 2x's the cost of a single layer RW.

it will be expensive at first no doubt... but so were cd-r disks at one time... they will come down when the technology is mainstream. For right now we have some good "backup" programs (IE DVD shrink 3.1) to make dual layer disks fit on single layer. I can't wait for DL either... but it will come soon enough!
