Looks like one has a fancier gloss bezel and faceplate, the other is matte finish.

Yeah, I saw that difference... But I can't believe that the only difference between these two models is only the appearance. They have completely different model names. If that's the case I would expect they would have similar model numbers.

Anyway. They both appear to be identical with BDR-2208 drive.

BDR-S08XLT specs

BDR-208EBK specs

I looked carefully and both BD writers have identical specs. What am I missing here? (Because I find difficult to believe that the only difference between those two models is only their name.)

Hello

The difference between the two is that BDR-S08XLT is dust and dirt proof. In terms of specs (burn speed, etc.), they are the same. This can be confirmed by looking at websites selling the Blu-ray burner. It is unfortunate that Pioneer have not mentioned the dust proof feature on their website ...

See product description on these two websites:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Pioneer-BDR...TF8&qid=1374349737&sr=1-1&keywords=BDR-S08XLT

http://www.nierle.com/en/article/15...er__BDR-S08XLT,_16x_DVD,_15x_BD-R,_Black.html

If you zoom in on the photo on this website you will see it says anti dust on the front of the box

Thanks for the info!

I bought BDR-S08XLT about a month ago because it was a newer model without knowing that it is dust proof .

Great! I will do the same ...
One thing I am not sure is, does it support 3D Blu-ray playback?

How would you rate the Pioneer drive? I am looking at getting one of them. Any issues?

another thing to note is that the 2208 comes with a somewhat old version of cyberlink (powerdvd 10). I have an older version of cyberlink (powerdvd 9 + LG bluray drive), and it's still working fine for recent release netflix blurays. The 208 doesn't come bundled with bluray playback software.

note: cyberlink powerdvd 10 (media suite 8) probably doesn't work with windows 8 for bluray playback

my brother has a pioneer 2206 and it's been working fine.

If you need stand alone playback software, I'd suggest mac go
http://www.macblurayplayer.com/
It's relatively cheap (especially if you want more than 1 copy), small (cyberlink is kinda bloated), has a simple UI, has lifetime support, and has support for windows/mac.
I'm not sure if they're still working on 3d support though.

I don't have mine for more than a couple of months. In this sort period of time I didn't have any problems.

Generally Pioneer is considered a very good brand and S08XLT has impressive specs.
