Pioneer A06 DVD +- R/W Problem

just got a pioneer a06 and the first 4 cds are coasters? wtf? i have it set up as the slave on the primary ide since i have 2 hdds on the 2nd ide. it always gets to 74% then an error stating: Writing of CD Failed, ILLEGAL REQUEST: ILLEGAL MODE FOR THIS TRACK (5:0x64:0x00)

any ideas? is it doa? should i try a dvd-rw?
