Pioneer 16x Slot : Poor DVD Ripping Performance?

I've tried using both SmartRipper and CladDVD to rip a couple of DVDs with the Pioneer 16x dvd-rom, but the performance is horrible (<2x)! Even my old generic 8x dvd-rom did better for dvd ripping.

Are there any alternative rippers that work better with the Pioneer. What could I do?
