What's the deal?
Also, the firmware is region locked. Where can I get something better?

I thought a 16x would perform better for ripping than 4.1x. Any ideas?

DMA is enabled on the drive.
DVD's play just fine.
I've tried multiple ripping software, all say 4.1x

There is firmware out there to unlock Pioneer, just look for it. Also, if you have DMA turned ON, turn it OFF. Or vice versa. And see if you RIP any better. Also have your source drive on another IDE channel from your destination drive for RIPping and burning.

I have an MSI K7T Turbo-R and the drive is on the raid channel w/ my 16x pioneer and 12x burner are on the ATA100 controller.

Before it was on PIO mode4 and was ripping @ 1.2x, its doing much better on UDMA ATA66..

Is that a benchmark or actual ripping speed? How many audio tracks are you ripping while your ripping? Smart Ripper I hear has options for only ripping one audio track. Also, are the files being decrypted during ripping?

I use smart ripper and start at maybe 4.5X, but end at 10X plus. Thats with folded cables.

Is the DVD dirty?

Use smartripper (if you aren't already). For kicks you could try it without the CD-RW plugged in, but it shouldn't matter,

I assume you mean DVD ripping and not DAE, correct? It could be the software, because using Smart Ripper mine often rips at 4x or 8x or in the neighborhood, however using FU it rips faster, and DVD Decryptor it does a full 16x at peak.

I found Smartripper gave me the LEAST error/artifacts. But your milage may vary.

Try a diff 80 wire cable?

I never did a region unlock, I can rip fine. Never had the need to play a non US DVD.

i have no experience with the 106-S so i can't compare your speeds,
i like my NEC-5800, nice speeds and easily unlocked with a firmware-flash.

DVD ripping is actually very DVD-dependant. You will get slow ripping speeds on RSDL dvd's and much faster ripping speeds on SSSL dvd's. So don't fret, there is nothing wrong with your DVD drive. Although you can try tweaking your system and playing with drive configuration, cables, etc. to squeeze 1-2% more out of it.

And of course DMA should be enabled.
