Hey, until I get my new DVD-ROM in the mail, I'm stuck with my HD being Primary Master, CDRW being Primary Slave. I'm running WinXP. My HD is set to DMA, but my CDRW is stuck in PIO mode and I'm stumped on what to do...or is this how it should be?

In my BIOS I have everything set to DMA If Available, I've uninstalled the Primary IDE Drivers in my device manager.. I'm not sure if there's anything left to do. Any help's appreciated.

4 in 1's didn't work, just tried em

I rechecked my BIOS settings, set "UDMA CDROM Detection" and all to enabled, told all of my channels to default to UDMA100. There were also PIO options, which I couldn't disable and are set to auto. I've uninstalled and reinstalled the IDE channel after each of these steps to no avail. After installing the 4 in 1's and messing with the BIOS and reinstalling the drivers, my hard drive defaulted to DMA and my CDRW defaulted to PIO mode only. I set it to DMA if available, but no luck there either. Are there any other settings in my BIOS that could affect this other than my DMA settings?

Put all 4 channels under standard cmos setup to AUTO. Try putting the cdrw as master and the dvd as slave on the secondary ide channel. What happens?

I have to wait until tomorrow until I get the DVD-ROM. FedEx says it arrived in Fort Worth today so it should be here soon. I'll give it a whirl then and get back to you. :)

Will using that config - HD Pri. Master, CDRW Sec. Slave, DVD Sec. Slave.. effect performance noticibly? I'm using the rig for watching DVD's, gaming, and cd to cd copying from time to time.

And thanks for the help!

Do you have the channels in XP setup to use DMA if available? I'd check there, after ensuring auto is setup in the BIOS. If not, then perhaps your device does not use DMA.

Ok, well.. DVD drive installed w/o a hitch. My only quip is it's kinda ugly. :)

Anyways, XP tells me that my HD is running in UDMA Mode 5, the DVD is in UDMA Mode 2, and the CDRW is still in PIO mode. Maybe it's just a PIO drive or something..

HD is Pri Master, DVD is Sec. Master, CDRW is Sec. Slave.

First thing I would do is get that CDR off and onto another IDE channel, you're slwoing your HD down by that...

Well I am a bit confused DVD or CDRW. My Plextor 24 X 10 X 40 for whatever reason is set at PIO mode and everything is fine. 4:00 burns for 652 meg.

My Pioneer DVD rom is ATA 66.

Hmm, well after screwing around for a while, it seems I can get my HD and DVD on DMA, and my CDRW on PIO. Maybe the thing's just built that way. The only reason I ask is cause when, say, I access files (installing stuff for instance) on my DVD-ROM, my CPU usage is much, much lower than on my CDRW, which usually sits at 100%. Maybe my CDRW sucks. ;)

Thanks for the help, folks. :)
