I bought couple of RJ-45 female to female coupler at a local computer swap meet to extend one of cat5 cable. To my suprise, it does not work if I only use one (pc - cat5 cable - coupler - cat5 cable - router). If I use two (pc - cat5 cable - coupler - cat5 cable - coupler - cat5 cable - router), the connection is good. From this, it seems the couplers are wired pin 1 of one socket to pin 8 of the 2nd socket, pin 2 to pine 7 and so on. I thought inline coupler is always wired pin 1 to pin 1, pin 2 to pin 2... What do people do with this pin 1 to pin 8 coupler?

That's a rollover connection, used in serial connections and phones. Also highly unlikely those are category 5 rated.
