Well, there is a building site near where i live, me and a few freinds went into it and saw 2 of these big 25 gallon + tanks of pink liquid with a big valve at the bottom. And being the stupid kids we are we opened it, so there is this pink liquid gushing out of these tanks and it stunk!! really bad like some kind of oil or something and we went out of the site (being stupid we didnt have the common sense to get well away) and played around on the street on our bikes and stuff 5 minutes later we get head aches and the back of our throat hurts and one of my freinds felf dizzy. So i was saying lets get the hell out of here so we did we went to my freinds house and had a drink and about 15 minutes later we were ok

well i was just wondering if this stuff is really bad for our health and what it is!, its been worrying me all night

Oh my god head for the hills you released a chemical warfare agent!!!

But seriously if its a construction site and they have heavy machinery it might just be hydraulic fluid.

First of all, you should never have opened those vavles. Goodness knows what you've contanimated the ground (possibly even groundwater) with. On the other hand it might be harmless, I don't know.

Not knowing what kind of building site it is, I can't say what the pink stuff was, only that, if it made you feel that bad after only a few moments of exposure, it couldn't have been good. Whether or not you will have long-term effects I can't guess.

Needless to say, never do that again.

It means one shouldn't unleash upon themselves and the rest of society unknown compounds located on construction sites ;)

Also, it's not Pepto Bismol, though you'd be lucky if it was (stomach upset medicine is all that is).

It was propylene glycol, a low toxicity, biodegradable antifreeze.

Its not as bad as ethylene glycol, which causes kidney failure, but it is still stuff you don't wanna drink unless you have to. You have nothing to worry about.

If you are worried about it, go back to the construction site when people are working and ask them what the liquid is that you poured out.

Thanks Monel, i can rest assured now

and gittyup what do you think there reaction will be, we spilled 50+ gallons of pink sh!t, then we go back to the site and say "oh the otherday me and my freinds opened the valve of both of your tanks and we were wondering if it is harmful or not?" :p

If they're pouring concrete on site, it could be formwork release oil. They use chemical sprayers to apply the stuff to the inside of the forms so they pull off the cured concrete easier.

Regrettably, you're going to live either way.

Now, I can see how you might be curious. I can also see how you might open one of the valves to investigate. I could even fathom you running away with your tails between your legs when the fluid started gushing out. The inexcusable part is opening both tanks and emptying them. At minimum, you've paralyzed one of the crews for a couple of hours on Monday. I always hated arriving on site on Mondays to find what the local kids had in store for us. Occasionally, you have to send people home (without pay) because someone destroyed equipment or moved batterboards or other layout information.

Don't worry though. One day when you're working, it will invariably happen to you. And the cycle continues...

Darwin in action indeed.

Craig

Is this a guy thing? I can't even see being curious enough to open one of the valves to investigate. It's clearly someone else's property, is clearly an important part of whatever it is that they're doing and clearly something that they a.) will need to use and b.) is most likely very expensive. So how did you go from, "hey, there's these two big drums of potentially toxic, expensive stuff that doesn't belong to us and shouldn't interest us" to "Let's open up both valves and drain the potentially toxic stuff that doesn't belong to us and might be important to whoever owns it"???

At the very least, you deliberately damaged someone else's property just because you were curious and couldn't control yourself. At the worst, you not only wasted the property owner's money that they spent on the materials, their time and money to replace it, the time and money of the crew who would use it (do you think the boss pays them when they can't work?), you may have actually released toxic materials into the environment - you have no idea what it could or would do to the groundwater, plants or animals it comes into contact with, and you managed to make yourself physically ill (and probably killed off a few more brain cells).

First of all, once you opened the valve and saw the stuff coming out (and stinking, according to you), why didn't you close the valves again?

I'm flabbergasted. I'm also beginning to see why you're still a junior member, regardless of post count.

Jeez. :| :disgust:
