I think the whole Floyd thing happened because some stoner was being funny. He spun up an album and said "This is the coolest music evar", just being cute. The other stoners took him seriously and perpetuated this cruel hoax until it was embedded in the community.
Wanting to be cool, the non-stoners picked up on it.
It just keeps rolling on.
