Jim Morrison was not a poet.

Such an idea should end ~7th grade for most rational cognitive thinkers.

Well, he wrote poetry, so what should you call him?

poetry? morrison?

Uh... yes. Are you being facetious, or are you unaware books of his poetry have been published? Not heard "The End"? I mean, the quality of his poetry is certainly open for debate, but one can't deny that he wrote poetry.

Fair enough.

I just never thought that songs about being high, using stale, cliche, and simple-minded metaphor were in any way relevant.

I really like a lot of the Doors music, but I'm not a Morrison fan in the sense that the drones equate him to some literary god, when he's far from it. I think of him as a lyricist who had a knack for matching words to their type of music, as well as performing such properly.

I believe that removing his words from a performance, as in publishing them in a book, destroys the only significance that comes from what he wrote.

Except that the poetry that Jim Morrison wrote was not simply lyrics culled from his songs.

Admittedly much of it wasn't very good. He wasn't a great poet, by any means.

BUT his creation, the music of the Doors, was singular and evocative and unique and atmospheric and . . . true. It rang true to me, and it broke UNIQUE ground stylistically.

The Doors music was a singular artistic creation, beholden to no one.

Anyone can sit back now and say otherwise, or hate him for his second generation, emo followers, but for me, the Doors music rang . . . true . . . it struck a chord within me, it felt like the authentic creation of a genuine artist.

Say what you will, these are pretty good lyrics, perfectly delivered:

People are strange when you're a stranger
Faces look ugly when you're alone
Women seem wicked when you're unwanted
Streets are uneven when you're down

When you're strange
Faces come out of the rain
When you're strange
No one remembers your name
When you're strange
When you're strange
When you're strange

And I heard and felt what the guy was trying to say when he began The Soft Parade:

When I was back there in seminary school, there was a person there
Who put forth the proposition, that you can petition the lord with prayer
Petition the lord with prayer, petition the lord with prayer
. . .

YOU CANNOT PETITION THE LORD WITH PRAYER!

Then described the unspoken but pervasive, yet ultimately empty, recursively tautological self-justification for our day-to-day zombie walk through life:

Successful hills are here to stay, everything must be this way
Gentle streets where people play, welcome to the soft parade
All our lives we sweat and save, building for a shallow grave
Must be something else we say, somehow to defend this place
Everything must be this way, everything must be this way, yeah

Then ended this bleak song thusly:

When all else fails, we can whip the horses eyes
And make them sleep, and cry

Back in the day, I had the (dubious?) honor of being published in the same book of poems with Morrison. I'll call it, on balance, an honor.

Heh, I suppose I should weigh in on the OP, as long as I'm here. ;)

I'm not as huge a fan of Floyd as many here might be, but I don't think anyone can plausibly deny their greatness/significance.

Lol, I remember hearing the album Atom Heart Mother on opiated hash direct from 'Nam back in the day, and thinking it was the best album EVAH, then rushing out and buying it but never being quite able to "hear" whatever it was I "heard" that first time.

But I also remember being over in England when The Dark Side of the Moon came out. Friends had it, we played it over and over in their small rotation of decent albums, and that work is an enduring gem for the ages, imho.

Also, I take issue with people saying any music sucks. A band sucks if nobody listens to their work. You DISLIKE a band if a large number of people enjoy a bands work, but you don't.

Big difference. I never say anyone sucks unless I can do what they're doing better.

I'm gonna go ahead and still say that Nickleback sucks.

They do now, but I think their first and second albums were, and are actually quite good. Nickleback, on the other hand, sucks a lot.
