Which HD DVD do I need, the HD-A2 or the HD-XA1?

My TV only does 1080i. Do I need the XA1 to get 1080p or will my TV not even display it?

EDIT
I have a Denon 3805 to handle the DD duties

Actually, your TV does 720p...while it accepts a 1080i signal it'll convert it to a 720p signal.

It's really a 720p TV that accepts and downconverts 1080i signals.

It looks like both decks output 720p, so the advantage of the A1 is only in the uncompressed 5.1 analog out if you want to use it instead of a lossy compressed digital cable.

If lossy is OK you might just get an Xbox360 instead :)

Looking at your links, neither player displays 1080p, but Nutdotnet is 100% correct...looks like your TV will probably barf on a 1080p signal and convert a 1080i signal to 720p anyway, so you'd have no real reason to go above 720p.

It depends on just how much you care about the audio on your DVDs.

If you are happy with DVD 5.1 audio (lossy compressed dolby digital & DTS) then the HD-DVD audio from the cheaper deck will be about the same.

Many HD-DVDs have an uncompressed 5.1 audio track which can only be sent over HDMI (but receivers don't read it yet) or over analog cables, just like DVD-Audio and SACD discs.

This might make a difference if you plan to buy music performance HD-DVDs, I doubt it will be noticeable to most people for other content.

Tell me about it, I'm holding out atm for them to come out with a 1080p in about a 26" size or so. I got lucky and got a PS3 early though so my hand might be forced soon.

You don't need it, but like DaveSimmons said, you'd have the option to get the better audio tracks off it that way.

Not true. The HD-DVD and Bluray players can decode/unpack the HD audio formats into PCM and then send it via HDMI to an HDMI 1.1 or higher A/V receiver for playback. Of course, you can use the player to decode the HD audio into analog and sent it out the player and into the A/V receiver via the analog in/outs.

It won't be until mid-'07 when A/V receivers will be cable of receiving the raw HD audio streams from the HD players.

Interesting, so you say receivers available now do accept lossless 5.1 PCM audio over an HDMI cable? Is this true of most/all 2006 models with HDMI inputs or just a few?

It is only true if the A/V receiver is HDMI 1.1 compliant or higher.

HDMI 1.1 also allows DVD-A and SACD to be transmitted over an HDMI cable as decoded/unpacked PCM.

Cool, huh? :)

Nice, what I'd read of HDMI only mentioned lossy 5.1 as with optical/coax digital.

So oldsmoboat if your receiver has a HDMI 1.1 input it doesn't look like there's any audio advantage to the -XA1.

sorry for the sarcasm.

You don't have to be a douche about it. This is OT, after all.

The video section in this forum is more for PC video cards and monitors, not for home theater related banter. There have been PLENTY of HT talk in OT over the last several weeks, including a thread by YOyoYOhowsDAjello containing a poll to see how many people would be interested in an HT section.

Its from Continental.com.....you have to join onepass.com and purchase something cheap to get 100 miles( like a $10 magazine), after that they credit your account with 100 miles then you can buy the DVD unit from continental for $363 shipped + 100 miles...simple

Why would I post a HT question in a computer video forum? I guess if I was an idiot would be one answer. What's another?

maybe because people on here know about more then geekie techie sh!t? I've posted HT questions in OT, which is... surprise off topic! and got great answers. I've also posted automobile repair questions, sh!t about working out, shaving and whatever else. I think a stupid person would be a member of 50 different forums when they could get the bulk of what they need here in OT.

If you want real answers, go to AVSforum, or just look for a thread about the same topic you're looking for since I'm sure they have a bunch over there.
