Ping times over a Wireless connection?

Hi all..
I am using a DLink Wireless router (the Xtreme one along with the same network type card).. and although I get a decent connection from how far I am (house is large) my pings are a bit crappy in most games I play online. Is a high ping number just part of wireless? (and I use WPA encrypt so not sure if Encryption adds to the ping or slows stuff down).

I have been eying those nimo Pre N routers from Belkin and would that help at all in reducing my ping? Any other ideas? there is no phone connection anywhere near my comp in my house so my DSL modem is connected to my DLink wireless router a distance away. Again the closer I get or the stronger signal I get the better my ping?

thanks all

ok pings, is probly your connection, i just got wireless and i was looking up on how to share files, but it sates it plain and simple, wireless is no different from regular cat5 cable, excpet there isnt a wire, it replaces the wires with nothing.

I think you need to check your wireless setup. My wireless equipment share files just fine. And it is very simple, not difficult.
