Ping times during day are rediculous...

I can be playing online multiplayer games late at night and get sub 50 pings to some servers, and mostly all under 150.. one of my fav. servers is a few hundred miles away, and I get 40 pings all night, right now I am pinging 320 to it! this is quite unplayable. I had a cable modem on this same service a couple years ago and did not experience these problems, since then we moved out of town, and only just this month were able to signup for cable internet. I am one of very few in the neighborhood who have signed up so far for cable in this region. I still get a solid 1mb connection during the day (service is 1024k capped down, 128k up), and download speeds are not affected but latency is suffering pretty bad. no other problems to speak of other than bad ping times. Is there anything I could do or the cable company to fix this, or is this just the way its going to be?

Setup a game server. That will fix your latency problems.

Also, try finding out where the latency is. Tools like visual route can help with things like that. If the latency is on their network they can try and fix it, if it isnt you have been bitten by the fact that the internet is only so big and more and more people keep joining it. 🙂
