PING and TRACERT work, web pages don't show!

I have an issue with a customer's computer of mine. I can run a PING on www.google.com and a TRACERT on www.google.com (and any other site for that matter) and it worked fine, but the web page is still unable to load in a browser! He is using XP. Here is what I've tried so far:

Both IE and Firefox
Virus/Spyware scan - nothing found
Ran a winsock fix program - did not fix

One thing I did notice was that he had a strange showing in control panel. He had about 5 options from all different ISPs under network connections. I deleted all of the he wasn't using anymore, and it still did not fix the error. There is one icon I don't recognize: Default Gateway or Internet Gateway. I tried to disable it but it would not allow me.

Tomorrow I am going to try reinstalling the driver. I am also going to take some pictures or screenshots and post em up.

Any suggestions?
 
The first thing to check with everything's "working" but there's no web browsing, are the "LAN" settings in Internet Explorer's "Tools/Internet Optinos/Connections..." menu. Once there, check for a "Proxy Server" setting. For most home users, there shouldn't be a Proxy Server.
 
The only box clicked in that menu is the automatically connect box.

Any other ideas?

Edit: Wow reinstalling the driver did not work either. I cannot believe this, I have played all my cards except the reinstall OS, which I do not want to do. I guess I'll try a PCI NIC to see if that works.
 
JackMDS, I tried every one of those options and none worked. Going to install a NIC next.

Edit: WOW The NIC is not even working. I installed the drivers and installed it, reset the computer, and now it keeps reinstalling the old driver for the ethernet port on board.

I'm so confused, I want this thing fixed.
 
I didn't see a mention of whether you'd tried connecting in IE and/or Firefox using only the IP address, rather than www.google.com. If you haven't already, try it like this: http://74.125.45.103 If that works, you have a DNS resolution problem, not a NIC problem. If *that* is the case, go to the command prompt and type: ipconfig /flushdns

Then try connecting my the URL instead of the IP address.

He was pinging www.google.com, so it won't be a DNS issue.
 
I've been able to ping by the domain name in CMD prompt but not resolve the name in browser's before, and the suggestion I made worked. Just an FYI...figured since it worked for me, it might work for the OP. s/he can take it or leave it and s/he sees fit.
 
Do you have McAfee, Norton Internet Security, or Norton 360 installed?

I have had a similar problem caused by corrupted/incorrect configuration in all three of those products. In all cases, the issue was fixed with a reinstall of that application. In some cases, you may need to go to the software vendor's website and find the appropriate clean tools.

If you can ping an address by name and then not be able to do an HTTP request by name to the same site you've got either a fubar'd TCP/IP stack or a badly configured application. That is assuming there is a valid HTTP server at that address 😛
 
Have you booted up with a PE disk with networking enabled. That will definately give you some answers on if the hardware is working or not.
 
telnet www.google.com 80

I'm thinking you will not be able to connect. Your outbound port 80 is being blocked. Move towards the egress interface of your internet access device and attempt to telent to google on port 80.
 
I suppose I never posted my conclusion...

Well after taking a break from this machine, I worked on a Dell with a P3 and 256mb of RAM and it was working faster then the computer with the internet problem. The guy has so many junkware programs his OS is just hosed, so it's just gonna be a reinstall.

Edit: forgot to mention, thanks all for the help. If i get the time I'll try out some of the newer things mentioned just for fun =D
