Alright here's the deal. I've got a very tight budget, it's so tight, that I need to make this rig work for EQII without spending money. I need it to run with a constant frame rate on ANY setting. (sometimes lags in big cities etc..)

Here's my stuff....

Asus A7N8X Deluxe Mobo
AMD Athlon 2200 XP
512 MB PC2700
Nvidia GeForce 4 ti4200 (4x 64mb)
120 gig WD HDD

I have coolbits installed, and i know vaguely how to Overclock my stuff, i just want some advice/ overclock specs (aka max clock speeds for my stuff) and you know...help lol

Please someone tell me how to give my computer a boost without spending a dollar. Thx all

Ryan

well a $60 512RAM upgrade would be great. if you bought that stick of RAM and overclocked your CPU and video, it would be a lot better

i have a question. when you go into a big city in WoW or EQ2, its the lag cause by CPU power or video card rendering power? (i think its the video card)

in eq2, probably the video card (depending on the qraphics settings), but in WoW i would think cpu.

I also think that a lot of hte big city lag is server lag as much, if not more than, it is lag on your system. With creatures and such in other wild areas its being determined by the game in a fairly simple manner but in cities it has to input the info from all the other peoples machines, process it with your data nd then output it back to you.

there will diffenately be more LAG in cities, but lag and low fps are two different things.

You shouldn't be playing an MMO then if you can't afford to upgrade your computer to keep up. ESPECIALLY not EQ2. Gotta spend what, $15 a month to play. Plus you know they'll have a thousand expansions you'll HAVE to buy. When all is said and done, you have spent enough to buy a whole new PC... Just quit man. I know people that lose marriages, friends, and all they own over this stuff. It's not worth it.

if u mean the initial lag when entering a large area with lots of stuff happening... it's RAM

Going from 512 to 1024 almost eliminated that for me. I'm running 1.5GB atm and I still get it at times, but that's simply the hard drive being slow at loading the terrain. I hate hard drives. The weakest link, hugely, in any computer.

I know, I was resonding to his question as to whether it was ram or gu that was causing LAG when he entered a big city.

No it isn't. :p

Comparing WoW to EQ2 is like comparing watered down beer to a straight shot of tequila.

Best the OP can do for his computer without spending any money would be to OC his vid card a little and his proc a little.

Spending 60 bucks on another 512MB of RAM will help decrease your load times immensely, and a video card upgrade would help too, but the 200 dollars it'd take would probably be too much for you. :(

Not sure where people like Todd33 get their information from, but EQ2 is a blast to play. So many layers of complexity and quests to do. :) And runs very smooth on my P4 2.4C and 6800GT with 1GB of RAM. I do have to turn the terrain textures down to medium settings in cities though, expecially when there are a lot of players actively moving around. Out in combat zones, Antonica, Thundering Steppes, Zek, Enchanted Lands, Varsoon, Stormhold, etc, its not an issue.

Don't let people here tell you that EQ2 is a bad game, its not. Its an extremely good game which looks fantastic. Coming from someone who's played both, EQ2 is the better game for your dollar. Even diehard WoW'ers, like Schadenforth(sp), have admitted they are now bored with most aspects of WoW, save for Raids.

Play EQ2, its fun. And the expansions, which you don't HAVE to buy, will ensure that you continue to have fun in the game. :)

I played years of EQ1, AC and the first month EQ2, WoW is the better game. It has nothing to do with hardcore vs light, it's about fun vs boring. EQ2 is just bleh. Linear zones/quest, boring world, restrictive gameplay and little solo viability.
