Pill, Patch or implant?

Kenazo

Lifer
My wife's been on the pill since we were married, just curious about the other options out there. any opinions or experiences?

not quite the info I'm looking for. 🙂 We may still want kids somewhere down the line. I know there are a few women on the forums, what's their opinions?

The patch has the same exact drug as the pill, it's just changed out every week instead of of taken every day. Pretty much the same side effects short of maybe some skin irritation where the patch is applied.

The implant is wierd and not really used short of court orders on sex offending women and very bad cases of child neglect/abuse. It can last for upwards of a couple years IRC.

Depo is another choice. It's a shot that a woman gets every three months. Tends to have the worse side effects (also halts a woman from having a period) but for women that don't suffer bad side effects and can handle not having a period for however long they are on the shot it's a very good choice. It's cheaper than pills, only have to have it done 4 times a year, and prevents an unpleasant 3-7 days a month.

Get the shot. Costs the same as the pill, but you only do it once ever quarter. Much more convenient, and no forgetting.

Pill is too easy to mess up on (forget one day, rest of the month is blown.) Implant caused some deep scaring in my arm, don't know if I would do it again, I might (no periods was great.) Depo shots were awesome, four a year and I didn't have to think about it (no periods either.) Never used the patch, but I think it might be a good alternative for women who don't like shots.

I have heard that some women can have a period of infertility after going off the pill. I got pregnant within a month or so of having my Norplants removed, and not terribly long after going off of Depo. I repeat, no periods rock.

Lola has the patch and it works well. It is really cheap with our insurance ($9 a month).

Keep in mind that the implant has more side effects and is more dangerous than the rest.

If you forget 1 day, a week is blown, not the whole month.

At last, according to the pills my girlfriend is currently taking.

i would reccomend depo. im on nuvaring right now which is a little weird... its umm... inserted and left there for 3 weeks, then taken out for a week while you bleed. im trying to get back on depo though, it leaves you so little to worry about and is very effective. and no periods. goddd so good. except when she decides to stop, it will bleed FOREVER.

Another bad thing about Depo, that we've read about on multiple health sites, is that depending on how well your body "takes" to it, it can take very, very long for you to be able to conceive if you are trying to after you stop taking the shot. We've read horror stories about it taking up to 2 years for a woman to be able to conceive after stopping the depo shot. There really aren't these sort of side effects with the patch/pill alternatives.

It's something to keep in mind.

all birth control will make you gain weight if you have unhealthy eating habits or a weight problem to begin with. i have never gained weight from birth control.. it has made my friends boobs get bigger, but sadly i missed out on that side effect too.
