I was just checking the stepping of my proc and the hsf must not have sat back on correctly after I took it off, cause I opened it up again and the hsf fell to the bottom of the case. It was turned on for about 10 mins, but it wasn't running, (i went to log into the server and it wasn't online) THan I thought well i better check make sure the hsf is on correctly...thats when I found it on the bottom of the case. anyway I put it back on and it booted right up.. Is there an overheat protection or something I know I've fried an XP by doing the same thing(that was intetional and for experimentaion though:p) The proc is a PIII-S 1.4

Yes the P3's do have protection and so do AthlonXP's. BUT it must also be supported by motherboard and a lot of early SocketA boards have little to no protection.
