PIII slot 133bus + PC100 SDRAM + mobo???

Just made a dumb mistake upgrading an aging 440BX system: I have tried to upgrade Celeron400 to PIII800, but bought the 133MHz FSB one instead of the 100MHz FSB(DUH!😱) Unfortunately the cheapo HP OEM mobo comes with factory jumpers removed, so no overclocking for me (it's Asus P2B-VT).

Any suggestions where can I stick my Slot1 PIII800EB/133FSB and 128+256 PC100??? I mean, what motherboard...

Thanks for any suggestions,

TYAN Trinity 400 will allow you to run memory asynchronously (meaning you can run FSB @133 and RAM -33 from that =100) from the FSB speed. Most slot 1 boards using VIA Apollo 133 chipset can do that. I would recommend getting PC133 RAM though as the PC100 will drop performance.

You could also try a post in the For Sale forum, to swap for a 700 - 800 @ 100 FSB. If the person offering to trade has high heatware and a good history here (more posts than you 🙂 ) it's a fairly safe trade.

You could also run it at 600 @ 100 FSB, which should still be much faster than a 400 @ 66 FSB and save you the cost of RAM or another mobo. Set the cash aside for upgrading to a P4 or AMD XP 😀

Yeah, but who would trade with a guy like me with NO history...

The processor won't even work with my motherboard - just won't boot. And since it's only a crappy OEM board, I can't preset any FSB, or multiplier settings with jumpers or BIOS. Is it suppose to autodetect the processor???

Although I would prefer to stick with the old board, even with degraded performance, I just can't force it to work...🙁

The most annoying thing is that I bought the 256MB PC100 stick with the processor - what a waste...

I guess I should start looking for a cheapo Apollo133 board...:frown:

pvtB i have the same board, and am in the process of finding a new chip to put in there, havent found one yet, but anyway...
the Asus P2B-VT doesnt support 256mb sticks of RAM, only 128mb to 8mb per memory bank, for a max total of 384mb(128x3). Also, what stepping is the CPU? I know that the cB0 stepping of slot 1 PIII's will work up to 1.0ghz on this motherboard, and also it will work at 133mhz FSB, with PC133 sdram... maybe PC100 sdram too ?? not sure about that part... I say get a 128mb stick of PC133 sdram instead of the 256mb stick, and give that a whirl... i know a guy who has a slot 1 1.0ghz PIII(cB0) 133mhz FSB, 384mb PC133 sdram, all on the Asus P2B-VT.
Eventually I would like to get to that point, but just so you know, the cB0 stepping of PIII's is pretty hard to find. If you have more questions just shoot me an email at JOHN_4685@msn.com

EDIT: On second thought, i just remembered that the Asus P2B-VT motherboard was made with two chipsets, either 440BX or apollo pro 133, i see yours is the BX, unfortunately mine is the apollo version 🙁

Look in the FS/FT forum for a P3V4X mb. It lets you run a 133 cpu and 100 ram or the
other way around. I think I saw one for $55 there yesterday.

VIA Apollo Pro 133 and 133A chipsets can do that, run the CPU at 133 and the RAM at CPU-33, which is 100 then. Most boards implement that, so your range is from Elitegroup no-nonsense boards to anything ridiculously expensive with all the bells and whistles.
