I'm running a P3B-F (slot1) motherboard and an 850 MHz CPU. I have 128 MB PC133 memory (single DiIMM, I just caught a deal on a generic 256 MB Dimm I'll get tomorrow). When I first installed the CPU, I o/c'd over 1 GHz, but now I get the dreaded BSOD when Windows2000 tries to load. I'm very stable and cool at 977 MHz. My vid is a 2X AGP 32 MB AYI Rage Fury, and it's my first suspect. I'm upgrading as soon as the 9700Pro AIW preice stabilizes. I plan to do the MB/Memory/CPU upgrade in 6-9 months.

FYI. I just put a Tualatin Celeron in my buds P3B-F in a Slot-T Slocket. Running nice @ 1.6 Ghz.

Thanks for the info. I don't think I'll go that route, but I figure it's worth a serious look. I'll probably do a MB/CPU/Memory combo instead once I can get a reasonable price on an HT CPU. I figure some memory (I took out 96 MB PC100 memory and left just 128 MB PC133) and the video card will carry me until I upgrade the system :).

if you can, raise vcore more?
or what about vio? (i think that controls voltage to pci/agp/dimms on the older mobos)
or if you can raise vdimm separatly on that mobo, raise it

I can change my vcore, but I only can change my fsb as far as any components. Here's my specs for the rest of my system, if you think it'd help.

Motherboard: Asus P3B-F 440BX (100 MHz FSB, 2X AGP)
CPU: Intel 850 MHz Cu-Mine Processor
Memory: 128 MB Generic PC133 (Cas3)
Video: ATI Rage Fury 32 MB 2X AGP w/ TV out
Sound: Sound Blaster Live mp3 with toslink adapter (it?s a card to connect to the board that allows a plug in for a digital adapter so I can run it to my receiver through the optical input)
Hard Drive: 3 X 23 GB Seagate Elite UW SCSI 5400 RPM
4 GB Western Digital drive (stores an alternate boot path if I have a problem with accessing my other drives)
DVD Drive: Pioneer 10/40X DVD 305 SCSI
CDRW: Yamaha CRW2100S 16X/10X/40X
SCSI Adapter: AHA2940UW Pro Ultra Wide
Ethernet: 10/100
Modem: USR 56k PCI
Monitor: S-Video input of my 32? television
OS: Win2k Pro
Logitech Wireless Keyboard/Mouse
PSU: Enermax 365FC

EDIT: My processor is the 686 version. I think my vcore needs to be 1.70.

There was a selection for "DIMM Setting". It gave the options 8 ns (125 MHz) and 7 ns (143 MHz). My memory is 7.5 ns, but it is running fine right now w/ yjr 7 ns setting. It changed a setting for cas when I set the DIMM setteing, and changed it to 3 (no option to change). I know from CTSPD I have cas3 memory.

EDIT: CAN I OVERCLOCK COPPERMINES?

Coppermines are multiplier-locked. You can only overclock them solely by raising bus speed. For example 500E could be overclocked to 667MHz this way. Of course, all overclocking voids the warranty and should not be attempted without proper know-how.

So I guess vcore is no help.

I think I'm gonna cave in and try the Tually and slot-T combo you recommended with that old Packard Hell 'cause it won't be but 10-$15 more than what everyone wants for their old 1ghz celerys and slotkets :frown:

If it doesn't work I can always sell it for a small loss.

I remember reading that Ti4600's are actually faster than R9700's at lower CPU speeds.

Perhaps you should keep that in mind?

EDIT: Linky, not as fast as I thought.

Perhaps a R9500 would better suit your interests?

Interesting article. I still prefer the 9700Pro AIW for 2 reasons. First, I'm almost certainly going to upgrade my MB/Memory/CPU here soon. In a few months, once I can get a good price on an HT CPU, I'll do the upgrade, and I'll probably get a Springdale MB when they're available, even if I buy a 533 FSB CPU.

The other issue is how I use my PC. I've been going more and more to system integration. My TV is my monitor, and I run a toslink to my stereo so I can use it rather than buy computer speakers. I plan to upgrade to an HDTV at some point, and from what I can tell it's the first AIW model with that feature. The 8500 AIW is not that much cheaper right now. I figure I can pick up the 9700 AIW at a good price now that the 9800 is released. Prices are dropping, I'm waiting for them to stabilize on this tier.

I searched the overclockers.com database and discovered you get registry errors past 977 MHz, so this seems to be where I should be. Forcing my memory to 7 ns seems stable, so as far as I can tell I'm as overclocked as I can be without some additional hardware. Best Buy is playing games with my order, and I'll probably need to cancel my 256MB PC133 and order from Tiger Direct (only a couple of dollars more).

I also think I need to just look for an upgrade in my MB soon. The 9700Pro AIW will help to extend my life a bit, at least until I see some good pricing on the HT CPUs. In the end, I think you can only put so much into a board before you have to give up and sell it to a friend with an even older computer.
