I was using a friend's system for the first time today, and notice his temps on his PIII 866 were running in at about 60C as reported in the BIOS by the PIII onboard thermistor. I know these are waaaay more accurate than the Athlon/Duron thermistors which are not on the CPU core, but is this temperature too high.

P.S. The system is rock stable and the cooler isn't too hot either. Feels like my FOP38 with my DURON 900 @ 1.84V.

that temperature seems too hot for my liking although within Intel specs.
is that temperature at idle?
it may be that his HSF isn't on properly or the fan not working properly. the fact that the HS is coolto touch could simply mean that there is poor heat transferance from cpu to HS.
does his case have any fans for cooling/ventilation?
what's the air temperature?

OK. The temperature ranges from 42C to 58C (42 being at idle, 58 at fl)
I am quite sure that the HSF is making good contact. Air temp is 25C, case has one intake fan and one outlet fan. Ambient case temp is about 28C.

This is strange, cos most people I know have temps in this range, for both AMD and Intel CPUs. Could be an Australian problem :(

Are you sure his ambient case temp is 28C with only 2fans?

What heatsink is your friend using?

my p3 800 @ 900 at 1.65v is 22 to 23 idle to about 26-28 full load
dual side blow holes, 120mm 80cfm fans, alpha p3125, the temps you are talkin about are definitly high, does he have after market hsf or an intel
hsf? cause if it is a intel hsf those temp can be right on

Actually, I think it is a motherboard error. This is because the CPU is seated properly, making good contact, and the HSF gets only moderately warm. I set up a PIII 866 system today with a different mobo, and the temp reported was about 10C cooler at fl.

BTW, the CPUs are using stock Intel HSF units.
