PIII 650E temps good or bad?

Sys temp is 33C, cpu temp is 40C after playin 2 games of q3a.

First time installing a proc. It is a FCPGA PIII 650E ,100MHz/FSB, 256K L2 Cache using a IWILL SlocketII "FCPGA to Slot1 converter" on a DFI P2XBL Rev.DE+ Slot1 mobo. I used the stock hsf with the thermal pad scraped off but put on some Artic Silver II. I covered the the whole chip not too thick, not too slim IMO with the ASII. Kinda got sloppy on the hsf install and some went over the edges of the chip but not a big mess. I cant see a gap between the hsf and the chip.....is that bad?

I only hav 3 fans in the box. One on my Asus Geforce2 32MB Deluxe(<50C bad?),the hsf on my cpu,and the one that blows out the 235W Enlight Corp. psu.

I upgraded from a Slot1 PII 450 with sys temp of 30C and cpu temp of 37-38C after gaming.

Also on bootup, why does is say PIII at 650 but with " Processor number disabled"? I always heard there was something on PIIIs that needed to be turned off.....it that true? My friend lol told me a while back that the government could spy on P3 users......haha tell me this isnt true 🙁

I cant make heads or tails of the Intel site and I cant find anywhere else that says prefered temps for my 650E.

Thx

Some temps taken at 20deg-C room temp not real P3s but may help ..

-- Celeron 566 OC`d at 705 - 32 degrees after playing UT for ages , cheap Coolermaster Athlon HS/Fan - AS2

-- Celeron 566 at stock - 29 degrees after running CPU Burn for 2 hours, same HS/Fan - AS2

-- Celeron 1200 OC`d at 1300 - 30 degrees after running CPU-Burn for 2 hours same HS/Fan using Speeze`s thicker "silver" paste

40deg seems a bit high for the P3-650 but unless you`re at the same room temp using the same MoBo it`s hard to tell. what is the airflow like around the CPU?.. P2-450s tended to have very large heatsinks and the deschutes core ran far cooler than the older Klamath..

As for the CPU number (serial number actually) , this was introduced with the original Katmai P3 and the machine`s reporting of it could be disabled in later BIOSes, I`m not sure about the government, but if a machine or CPU was stolen, there may have been a way for Intel`s site to pick up on this via cookies or something - most people disable it, some BIOSes disable it by default

"I cant see a gap between the hsf and the chip.....is that bad?"

If you can see a gap between the HS and the CPU's "slug" (the raised center block in the middle), yes that's bad. The HS should sit flat against the slug and not on one edge.
If you're talking about seeing a gap between the HS and the green part of the CPU, that's just fine. You should only apply HS compound to the area of the CPU that actually comes into contact with the HS.
If you're running a P3 on a slocket that's great. You can "dry fit" (assembled without compound), the HS and CPU together to see what kind of contact there is. If the HS is only making contact on one edge, you can tweak the retention clip, little by little until the HS sits flat. Just remember to reapply the HS compound after you've got the fit you want.

The government doesn't need your CPU ID to spy on you.

<< I cant see a gap between the hsf and the chip.....is that bad? >>

... No, thats a good thing, a gap would be very bad. 40c is a tad high but nothing to worry about. Celerons run cooler than P!!!s.

No there is NOT a gap between the proc and hsf. I didnt get the ASII on the green much either jus on the chip and lil got squished down the side of the chip.

Airflow......dont know how to explain it really. Theres a fan blowin at my geforce 2 thats right under my proc on its slocket. Then the hsf is blowin on the proc. Then the psu is blowin it out. I do have wires and ribbons crumpled up right outside the bays.....guess their in the way.

The slocket is too big and my psu is wedged between it and the side of my case 🙁 Cant get the screws back on my psu 🙁

Given your info... tight space, I'd say 40C after some gaming isn't too bad. I had a 650 @ 910 that would start acting up at 47C.
With the side mounted PS you've got, I'm sure it's knocking down your air flow, with that slocket. You might want to think about a case that has the PS up top, if your $$ will allow it.

what mobo u use to get it that high?

I never looked at my psu as being side mounted....hmmmmm. It screws in through the back. Its just wedged between the slocket, top and side of my case.

I used an Abit SA6R to get those temps 🙂 That was when I pushed the 650 with more FSB & core voltage. At 910, it ran solid as a rock.

Also,is it suppose to say, whenever I right click My Computer/properties using Win98SE....Under Computer: GenuineIntel "x86 Family 6 Model 8 Stepping 1". If I remember right when I had the PII....It just said Pentium II. Whats up with that?

Thx

After playin Tribes1 plus its 80F degrees outside and feels about the same or hotter in my room my temps were: sys temp 37C and cpu temp 43C....hottest yet!

My pc performance hasnt froze or showed me any signs that something is wrong. I guess when the 100F Louisiana temps of my summer roll around. My 650 will be truly tested
