PIII 450 196MB notebook - which OS?

I searched the forum and I really couldn't find a clear answer to my question.

I have a Sony PIII450 196mb notebook.

I've done the basic research and I have the drivers for win2k and winXP.

Should I upgrade from win98SE to win2k or winxp?

I main do internet, photoshop, word processing, etc. No gaming.

thanks in advance.

Win2k will run fine on your machine. I have win2k running on a K6-2 350 with 128mb just fine. I have no experience with XP, but it should be ok as well.

It seems though that most people recommend winXP over win2k because of the support and slightly better stability. I am going to upgrade to either win2k or winxp over the weekend. Most likely it will be win2k.

If you are a serious Photoshopper then go w2k. It takes up less memory than XP which leaves more for Photoshop.

win2k rules for laptops. It is leaps and bounds ahead of win98! I've run Win2k on my old TP560X - 233MMX Pentium, 96mb ram, 4 gig disk...

good luck man!

I also recommend 2k, Im running 2k on my 233, 128,4gb Tecra 750CDM with no problems, Its a bit sluggish at times, but fine for me when I do use it

thanks for the responses. I have upgraded to a clean install of win2k. I'm in the process of installing some programs to give it a shot. thanks again!!!!

This is a great forum!!

Yap w2k is the best bet... good apm and acpi....

If you have the space in the disk, you could also install linux there. Since you don't game it is also a good option....
I love to have Linux on my laptops... at best if someone gets to it he won't understand a thing 🙂

I tried WinXP Pro - turned off all the animation - it was accessing the HD alot which made it alot (since the HD is a 4200rpm). The animations itself was quick, the OS was just accessing the HD alot. I only have 196mb and I heard you really need a lot more than that especially with a slow CPU.

I did install win2k Pro and it runs great. Just as fast as win98 and so far a lot more stables. Network is a breeze, hardware setup was smooth. I think I'll stick with this one.

As for Linux, unfortanately I don't know anything about this OS. I'd love to learn ... any suggestions on where to begin? I still want to be able to do photoshop and wordprocessing and html editing - and of course internet surfing and email.

TIA!!

Well my best Linux advice would be that you should read a lot before diving in.
Read the installation guides both at linuxdoc and linuxnewbie!

After you know a bit more, you can install for instance Mandrake 8.1! And take from there...

Some say that Gimp is just as good as Photoshop, I don't use them so I don't know, Mozilla should cover
you Internet needs and Koffice or StarOffice should take care of the word processing part!!

Notice I said that you should install linx in a dual boot setup with win2k! That's your best bet... learn
Linux and leave windows to work. As you progress in Linux you might use windows less...I know a
few persons that did that and ended up erasing windows...
