Hey everyone,
I've been out of the mix for quite some time and I'm looking to upgrade my existing BH6 + Cele 300A by buying a new mobo/CPU/Memory. Any suggestions on good motherboard combos with the PIII 1GZ? Also, is there a huge diff btwn CAS2 and CAS3 memory? I still have the good old PC100 memory (256) in my machine now.
Also, my sound and video cards are not compatible with Win2k. Any suggestions on economical options for these as well? I don't play computer games, so performance is nto that crucial (ie. no gaming boards). Thanks in advance for the help

Well, if you're on a budget, you could keep your mobo and try to extend the life of it. If it is the BH6 Rev 1.1, you could get a PIII 700E or something... and overclock it to 133 FSB and get 933mhz. With this solution however, you would have to go out and buy some PC133 ram (cheap right now... only about $45 shipped for 128 MB PC133 ram). If you have the BH6 Rev 1.01, then you could get a CeleronII 566 and overclock that to 850 (100fsb) or 952 (112fsb). 850 is usually "guaranteed", and the Celeron will only set you back about $60. Also, with the Celeron you would not have to get new memory.

if you're looking to get new motherboard, by far the Asus CUSL2 I've heard the most good things about it.

the difference between CAS2 PC133 and Cas3 PC133 is about a 20-25% performance increase, if you wanna crank the last bit of juice, get CL2, I mean.. the price difference is only like $5 bucks anyway.

that is assume you wanna go w/ a PIII 1Ghz. If you're on budge, go w/ the Cel 566 to 850.. nowadays it's almost a sure thing in terms of overclockability.

Ok, lets open it up a bit. What does everyone recommend? My BH6 has a Slot1 300a on it, so I guess its the older model BH6 (I bought it back in 98 or early 99). I've been reading reviews on both the PIII and Athlon chips.
I'll be using it for Win98SE and Windows 2000.

Like I said before, I'll have to either get a mobo with built in sound or a new card. Also, my video card is not supported in Windows 2000 (STB Velocity 4400 AGP).

Thanks again.

I have seen many, many references to BH6 boards versions 1.01, 1.02 and 1.03 running PIII's of 700mhz and above. Get the latest bios from Abit, the SS bios for your board and give it a try. Don't think the PIII 700 is the limit. Check Overclockers.com cpu database for the 700 and higher and you will see many references to the older BH6 boards running the faster processors. Hope this helps.

if you switching motherboard and cpu and don't mind an amd solution, I suggest a duron system. If you can find a duron 600 or 650 that would be even better since most dance 1gig or more. this way you don't need new ram as well.

Hey I'm an intel user right now with an ageing BX6-R2 P3-650. Ya I could get
an 850 or 1 GHz but for just a little more I'd rather have an Athlon 1 + GHz
and get better overall performance and more up to date tech all around.

I'd say sell what you got for what you can and start over with AMD.

My 2 cents...and a lot of research.

Thanks guys. When I was poking around on the internet last night, I found some drivers for my STB Velocity 4400 AGP that will work with Windows 2000. I went to the Nvidia site and thought that if the chipset was Nvidia and a TNT then it should work...well it did. That saved me some $$.
I ended up getting an Inetl Celeron II 633, ABIT Slotket converter, and a Golden Orb fan. I'm going to pop them in tomorrow after flashing my Abit BH6's BIOS to SS. I guess I can sell my Cele 300a (runs at 450) now.

Thanks for the suggestions!
