hey all. first, i wanted to say hi to everyone as im new to this part of the forums (usually im in the hot deals).

anyways, my quesiton is, on a sa6r (which supposedly can only hold 1ghz max) how far can i push my p3 1ghz ? right now, it seems to be runing at 1007 mhz, so im wondering if it can go any higher? what is a "safer" core voltage you think i could run it at? thanks for any help.

Well... we need some full specs such as motherboard, type of ram, kind of cooler your running. If this is just a normal Coppermine P3, it should handle voltages up to 1.85 fine as long as you have some good cooling. I'd try to keep it under 1.85. Also, it depends on the kind of bus speed you can hit since you don't have multiplier adjustment, so the kind of ram as well as PCI components might affect stability. With the newere Coppermines i believe people hit around 1.2ghz but of course your mileage may vary. ALso, is your Cumin 1ghz a 133 FSB part or a 100FSB part? That could affect your overclocking greatly since most SD-Ram didn't like going over 150mhz.

The 1 gig chips do not have a lot of thermal headroom. I had a couple of 100fsb chips, could not get to 1200 with stable cool performance.

Yeah, speaking from experience, I had a PIII 1000.... I basically just left the chip at stock speeds.. there is a reason they recalled the 1.13's. :)

I usually ran them @ 150 FSB. 1125 MHz. Any higher and the PCI starts to get too far out of spec. RE: The 1.13 recall. That was a very early stepping of the PIII. Later ones could run that with ease.

the mother board is apart of the title.. abit sa6r. the ram is just generic 512 SDRam 133. Cooling... i dont have much other than the common fans here and there. i believe it is the coppermine p3. its the 133 FSB.

also, sorry for asking such a noob question, but for thermal throttling, exactly what does this do? im gonna go look around for a descriptive explanation of this, so i find one, ill update this, but until then, can anyone clue me in? thanks.

well, if you want a general reference, you could go to www.overclockers.com and check out their user database. Then you will be able to see what others have gotten out of chips similar to yours. I really wouldnt expect much from a pIII 1Ghz tho.
Peace,
