PIII 1GHz or Celeron 1.3GHz?

Hi guys I wondered if you could help me on this question I can't decide which processor to get, I can go for the Celeron 1.3 but for an extra £15-20 I could pick up a PIII 1GHz, but I don't know which would be best. Please post your opinions.

I need to replace my older system which recently died with a PIII 600 + Mobo with one of these CPU's and a new Mobo. By the way what mobo can you recommend me? I saw the GA 6OXT and it was much more cheaper than the ST6/TUSL-2, But I am happy to switch depending on opinions (blue strikes me well that's why I opted for the Gigabyte).

I intend to:

Use it for gaming (alot of LAN gaming)
Not overclock

The biggest advantage of the PIII would be the 133MHz FSB. But it seems a little silly to spend £15-20 more for a CPU with a 23% lower clock frequency, considering the cheaper Celeron 1.3 shares the same 256KB L2. The Celeron should run cooler too, perhaps allowing for a cheaper HSF.

if your going to change the mobo as well, I would get a duron. Since you have pc-133 ram already you would be set. I am sure you could get a 1.2 ghz duron much cheaper than a piii or even a celeron. And since you will be doing lots of LAN gaming, the duron also has the advantage there.

I have a piii 800mhz and am going to bite the bullet and upgrade sooner than I had planned. I plan on getting a 1.2ghz duron + a msi k7t turbo2 mobo. I figure that will give me a decent boost for my games.

go after the celeron, it will make up for the fsb being slower since it operates at 300mhz faster.

If you were willing to overclock, I'd say get a Celeron 1.0A, bump it to a 133+ MHz FSB for 1.33 GHz. You would have a faster and cheaper setup than the PIII 1G or C1.3. I think even with the slower bus, the C1.3 would be better than the PIII 1G. The Tualatin CPU's have data prefetch logic and the Coppermine does not. Since the 1.3 is cheaper, that helps.

I agree, the Celeron Tualatin is certainly the better choice compared to the Coppermine. However, you may want to wait for 1.53GHz Tualatin Pentium III Processors. And they're coming very soon, sometime in April!

This just might make me go back and revamp my parent's 440BX based Dell machine. All I would need is an adaptor, BIOS update, and new HSF, right? That would be one well performing, quiet, and cool machine.

Droooolll! Wonderful PPro-core goodness. I've never been a fan of the Pentium-4's uneven performance so if Intel can keep cranking up the MHz on the PPro, I'm happy.
