Will upgrade my PIII 700Mhz soon about 2 weeks (just because someone wants to buy my 700mhz w/ motherboard P3V4X for $400.00(good deal on my behalf....anyways thinking about Athlon 1000 or Intel 1000, which one should I go.....(music editing, Photo editing, graphics, MP3's etc....)also what board should I buy.......how about ABIT BE6II Raid for Intel....or ASUS A7for Athlon....or should I wait for the DDR based mobo, test shows not much of a difference between KT133A.....help please.........

will be using:

Photoshop 6.0
Illustrator 9.0
Sooundforge, Cubase,Vegas for Audio
etc....

Win98SE or Win2000 for OS

thanks

Mike

An Athlon 1ghz with a KT133A mobo will probably be your best bet. The new KT133A boards will allow you to run FSB speeds approaching 150mhz with good memory. I can't say for sure, but I think a Athlon 1ghz running at a 133mhz FSB will beat a 1ghz P3 running at a 100/133FSB in most applications. Just my opinion...

The PIII line is almost at it's end. If you want to leave yourself a little room to grow then the Athlon setup is the better route. The KT133A chipset will give you that room without having to wait for the DDR solutions to become available.

Go for the Athlon Thunderbird 1 Ghz with the KT133A Motherboard. As others have mentioned; it has great performance, better value and is definately more future proof. Just be sure to have a good 300W power supply.

Edit: Also, just saw this in the same forum: Abit KT7A/RAID, available now. [Link posted by Insane3D]

Yeah what jpprod said! If you are even considering a PIII 1000, you've got to go with the 1.2 T-Bird.

Hmm, extra performence for less cost...that's why we love the Athlon.

I would go for the Kt133A, that gives you more upgrade possibilities. If you are planning to O/C then get the 1.0ghz and pump it up a bit, perhaps to 1.2ghz if you're not akeen on overclocking you could spend a bit more and get a 1.1/1.2ghz athlon.

How much memory are you going to have it that then? (Photoshop 6.0!)

I have trouble understanding why there is even a debate about this any more. I could understand a few years ago, when, as an AMD booster, I was often a lone, plaintive voice in the wind. These days AMD's performance and value are beyond reproach.

Contrary opinion here - because of your application preferences.

I don't argue that a T-bird is a better buy, but Adobe has optimized their software to Intel's SSE/SSE2. Photoshop, for one, does not take advantage of 3DNow and Adobe gives no indication that they will do that.

go w/ the athlon. it'll save yourself money and allow you to wait for another upgrade in the future because p3's can't get any higher. for 400 bucks you can get the 1.2ghz and msi k7t pro2a board

Senio Guy,

When running at a speed of 1200mhz, I'm sure those SSE optimizations on the 1000mhz P3 aren't gonna make it faster. but it is a shame that Adobe don't have more AMD support.

The price gap between the high end athlon processors are closing in, and I too suggest getting a 1.1 or 1.2 Ghz processor. It will just extend the life of your computer a bit for the future.

Definitely the Athy. Even if they were the same price, the Athlon takes it hands down, IMO. Older AMD processors were "value" proceesors with lacking performance. Now the Athlon often outperforms the PIII

A Pentium III 1 GHz is faster than an Athlon 1 GHz CPU, however, a 1.2GHz Athlon is faster than the 1GHs P3 and is cheaper so for speed/ price AMD is better, however, be prepared to fart around with Athlon/Thunderbirds and put up with more unstability problems... Intel still holds 1st in that regard. I'm not saying Athlons are a big hassle, but P3's are more reliable....

Have Fun !

Having built PIII, Athlon & K6-2 systems, I'm a little experienced with this. There are no more stability problems with the latest athlon platforms than there are with the latest PIII platforms. Sure, BX is rock stable by now but it's getting outdated...and if you want an athlon board with all the problems worked out (and stable working drivers), get one that is slightly older than current, like a K7V. K6-2 systems may never have their problems worked out in Win95, but I believe they are also more stable in Win2k.

I'd go with the PIII, sorry guys. Even though it costs more (maybe if you dropped the speed you'd get better value from Intel). You see, it's how the computer performs the applications that counts. SSE is a superior tech to 3DNow! and because of Intel's market position it has much greater support- particularly in productivity apps. It's also the standard processor that developers guarantee their products will work with.
