I am just wanting opinions from people on this choice. I work retail, and have the opportunity to buy:
i7-970: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-066-_-Product
Intel DX58SO: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-361-_-Product
Civilization V
For $410

I really just want opinions on whether this is a good time to go with this, what with the successor to 1366 coming out late next year. I would also need to throw another $100 in for some RAM, but I would also get $100 cash back from my credit card.
Current computer has an PII X4 920 with 4gb ddr2
Opinions? Seems like a stellar deal to me, but its quite a bit of money.

Why even ask? You can sell the cpu alone and make back more than your initial 400.

DO IT! DO IT! DO IT!

That CPU alone is $880 new, you could sell that all by itself for a massive profit!

You could then keep the rest of the components and buy a cheaper Core i7 930 quad core if you wanted.

Or you could just keep it as the six core i7 Intel CPU's will be top of the line for quite some time.

Alright alright. I'll be ordering it as soon as I get through all these damn quizzes I need to do.
Been working on them since I first posted this thread, taking a really long time.
Thanks for the opinions.

I got one for distributed computing apps. Got it yesterday in fact. For the price you can't do any better.

Well I don't think I will be getting that motherboard. Been looking at it and it really doesn't seem like that great a deal.
Also just found out you can't pay with a discover card, which was a really big reason I was even considering upgrading as I could get $100 cash back.
I'll have to decide in the morning. Think I might pick up the processor and wait for a good deal on a refurbished evga board or something.

You can certainly find a better motherboard. It's still worth doing though. Considering your current rig is running DDR2 I'd say yeah, it's time to upgrade to a faster setup. :)

Alright. Ordered the processor, skipped on the motherboard for now. Can't buy multiples of the processor bundles I would. Only thing I have available now is a 160gb ssd for $219.
Thanks for the input. Guess I will just have to find something else to put on my credit card.

Agree, you should get a better motherboard if you intend to overclock that chip and have fun with the new gears.

Do it, even it you don't want it for the performance boost you can sell the bundle for an easy $400-500 profit
