The motherboard of my old Dell desktop died, but the slot 1 350mhz pentium II is still in working order. Is there any point in keeping this thing (ie some real cheap source for a motherboard)?

The real question is, would you have a use for a 350mhz PII system? If so, put it in the closet, you'll probably get a gift motherboard someday, and you can put together a system. :) FWIW, I have a PII-300 that's a file server in my network, and it's more than up to the task. Doesn't seem to be any point in spending more money...

well it could be used for a router or file server type purpose

or should the time come as a 2nd computer

or maybe if you know somebody wiht an even older computer, and not much cash, maybe sell/give it to them (you could probably pick up a cheap motherboard somewhere, www.newegg.com, www.pricewatch.com, www.ebay.com, maybe local computer shop)

My self I would keep it for a while at least. If a computer show or something comes along your way. Maybe you will be able to find a nice cheap mobo. Then build it and use it as a ftp server or something. A P2-350mhz would be good enough for a small server.

I got two slot-A processor in a static bag and I don't even have mobo's for them. I did had one but the mobo went bad. I'm just waiting for a nice cheap mobo's to come along. One is a classic 600mhz processor and the other is a t-birb 900mhz.

I'll give you $15-20 for it.. I want to replace my Celeron 300A with a PII 350 or greater.. only if the price is right. :p

and no it's not worth keeping if you have any intentions of making the PC work for you. the only reason I want this is, because my Celeron 300A linux screw-around-on box is kinda slow.. i want at least 100 FSB, i think it would perform alot better.

I kept my old P][400 computer to experiment on, use a volitile machine to download stuff on, nd so forth. Keeps my primary PC clean of 'one second though' nistalls and such.

I've got a celeron 333 running FTP, web and mail .... my mom's main machine which I just built for her not long ago is running a PII 350 w/ 256 meg of ram. Win2k runs fine (enough ram is why) .. processors are overrated.

(seriously, my ma's computer runs GOOD .. it's not slow, opening explorer or word it's as fast as my athlon rig)

markuskidd, that PII-350 Slot1 would make a good second system for internet cruising or basic appls. like Office. I recently built a system around that processor for my daughter. It's hooked to my router to a cable modem and it works fine for its intended purpose. I picked up a Soyo 6BA+III Slot1 board for $27. JustDeals.com has a Asus 440BX board right now for $35. They also have a Chaintech 440BX for $30, along w/ an FIC 440BX for $20.

Or you could hit up FS/FT for some deals on 440BX boards .. man, 440 is a classic, everyone should have one :)

What would be the point of keeping a PII350?

It doesn't take up much space, so I guess keep it, but I strongly doubt you'll ever use it again.

Keep it... it's not like you're losing much money by keeping it anyway. I kept mine and tried to build a little box for the heck of it... but it's dead. :(

Seriously, if you ever need a stable backup computer for those times those bleeding edge systems give you sh*t, build the backup with a BX board.

Either a backup system, a testbed, or else, speaking for those who don't venture out of the Distributed Forum - use it to crunch SETI or one of the other DC projects out there.:)

Yeah, I do have applications for a 350mhz PC, just wasn't sure if there were any quality motherboards at a reasonable price (since it's so cheap to build a 1.4 ghz AMD system right now). It's only been recently that I've gotten into hardware so I'm not familiar with the boards that are worthwhile from that time. I'll take a look at the ones mentioned above, and if anyone else knows of any motherboards that fit the bill please continue sharing :D

Asus P2B (any flavour)
Abit BX6
Abit BH6
Gigabyte BX2000

Those are my favourites :)
