I am hoping someone here can help me out. I recently aquired 2 PII 400 slot one processors. I am a little bit confused because although they are the same spec. wise, they are completely different chip wise. one looks like it is the normal run of the mill PII 400 using the .25 Mu core and the other looks like it is a flip chip design or .18Mu core. Can this be true? Does Intel make two different types of PII 400 slot ones or is it possible that one is marked improperly? the markings are as follows:

standard PII 400:
400/512/100/2.0V S1
19380688-0072 Philippines
'97 SL357

flip chip PII 400:
400/512/100/2.0V S1
19200322-0176 Ireland
'97 SL357

Can they both use the same type of HSF or do I need something special for the Flip Chip type one?

All comments will be greately appreciated and respected.

Thanks,

Very late Pentium IIs came in the SECC2 form factor, similar to the Slot 1 Pentium III, where the back plate of the cartidge is missing and the CPU is mounted in a flip-chip design. These are still .25 micron, and not .18 micron.

An SL357 comes only in the SECC2 format, not that SECC1 format (the fully encasing cartridge) that original P2s came in.

This leads me to believe that the 1st processor that you have may be an example of a remarked processor. Please run WCPUID, and see if the CPUID it produces is 0652. If not, then it is a remarked processor.

This information can be found at the Pentium II Quick Reference Guide.

Both will need a different type of heatsink fan....SECC1 for the 1st one and SECC2 for the second one.

Interesting...I remember that later versions of the PIII-450 had smaller cores (similar to the 0.18, rather than Flip-Chip as you say). Don't see why your PII-400's would be different. The "Flip-Chip" one is older (week 20) than the first one.
And since Intel moved to the Deschutes (0.25) core after the PIII-333 which used the 0.33 core (name escapes me right now (tillamok maybe ?), anyone ?), your 400's should be the same...unless one is a remarked PII-266, but that would only be possible if it were a 0.25 PII-266, so it would normally look the same...
Can you post pics ?

Pentium II Klamath, 233MHz - 300MHz, were .35 micron. Tom is correct.
Pentium II Deschutes, 333MHz - 450MHz, were .25 micron.

No desktop Pentium IIs were ever manufactured at the .18 micron process or the .33 micron process. Only the Dixon class Pentium II mobile processors (with integrated cache) were manufactured at .18 micron.

SECC2 Pentium IIs were mounted differently on the PCB substrate than the original SECC Pentium IIs. Examine any of the Slot 1 Celerons....the original core is mounted as can be seen on Celerons, with the massive metal slug over the top.

SECC2 Pentium IIs were the first to use the "Flip-Chip" substrate mounting, although this is actually referred to as OLGA, Organic Land Grid Array. The Flip Chip name is not exclusive to the Pentium III S370 format...it's the PGA part of the name....not the FC.

Remember that all Slot 1 Pentium IIIs are SECC2 as well.

The Tillamook was a .25 micron mobile Pentium MMX processor, with speeds up to 300MHz.

Generally it was the Pentium II 333s that were overclocked and remarked as 400s, although later there may have been a small number of the .25 micron 266s that were remarked as well.

Andyhiu,

Thanks for the brilliant info on the CPU's in question.
I certainly learned a great deal and your comments were very helpful. I will go ahead and see if WCPUID Produces the 0652 ID#. This should be very interesting......for variuos reasons. I will let you know what I find out.

Happy Hollidays::D

Andy.. What in your opinion would be most "bang for the buck" ...want to upgrade cpu and vid card... MB is a Abit BH-6 ver 1.0, current cpu is Pent 2-400 with Voodoo 3-3000... thanks for any ideas...

looper: System getting a bit slow? Depends on how much you can stand waiting I guess....

If you don't want to change motherboard, I would recommend a P3-700, 750 or 800E...they are all similarly priced, but if you plan to overclock, then I recommend buying the cC0 stepping 700E.

For a video card, it depends on how much you want to spend. I think a GeForce 2 MX is a good buy. Your V3-3K is a respectable card....I would recommend waiting just a few more months to see how the NV20 pushes prices down.
