First off, don't let anybody tell you what to do with your body......Do whatever the hell you want to, and tell everyone else to f*ck off.....Personally (I'm a male, btw) I have both my ears pierced and my tongue pierced (boy, do the girlies love that one!).......Do people tell me it looks stupid? Sure, but for as many that hate there, there's double that who thinks it looks very nice....The tongue ring not as many people see, it's one of those kinda hidden piercings....
As for studios, head to your local piercing/tattoo shops, and ask them if you can watch them perform a piercing......Ask them about there sterility processes, and other things.......Just hang out there and see how they are........If they don't want you to hang out there, then leave immediately and find a new shop......The people there should be cool and willing to tell ya anything you need/want to know.....
Make sure when you get your ear pierced, get it pierced with a needle, NOT a piercing guns........The piercing studs they use in piercing guns are much too dull and actually tear the skin as they go through your ear......It doesn't hurt (stupidly got mind done w/ a gun), but it takes longer to heal.....Needles are razor sharp and dont tear the skin, so it takes less time to heal, and it's better for the skin....
Also make sure you clean your ears properly, when you get in the shower, lather the piercings up with soap, and slowly rotate the jewelry to clean it out......And make sure as you're rinsing it off, you rotate the jewelry as well...
I know this because I had to do it myself......Currently I have 12 gauge CBR's in each ear, stainless surgical steel.........Great stuff.......
