Piece of soffit fell off upper roof.. now birds and pests getting in

Going to try and and patch it up this weekend.

My big hesitation is trapping animals inside the roof, where they will suffer and die, and stink up the house with their slowly rotting carcasses.

Thoughts? Should I spray the area first and give it a day or two to clear out?

Good question. Maybe some moth balls? Birds scare pretty easily they may flee when you get near them

Usually the soffits vent to the open attic. You should be able to get in the attic and check for animals before fixing the soffit.

If you can aim some powerful speakers at the attic play Diamanda Galas singing and keep turning up the volume. Everything that can hear will leave. Be sure you have some good earplugs in first and keep your fingers crossed that nothing bites a wire on the way out.
