When I run pidgin start after a while the app disappears and I see this in the terminal...

Assertion '!in_worker(m)' failed at pulse/thread-mainloop.c:162, function pa_threaded_mainloop_stop(). Aborting.

Any ideas on what to do? It happens radomly and is annoying!!!

I'm on OpenSuse.

Disable all plugins and reset the config. I believe its in ./purple of your home folder. Just gzip the whoe thing so u can restore if I'm wrong.

i think Nothinman is on to something disable all sound in pidgin for a while see if it stays up and running.
Yep! Sound server is crashing...

I digress...

ICQ IM has been having some login isuues, the past few days.

The fix is to disable SSL in Pidgin.

If you're running Empathy, you're out of luck.

This is OT, but...

In case anybody cares, here is a workaround for ICQ (SSL) logins in Empathy.

I'm only mentioning this, as a follow-up to comments made above... 😉

And this is why I think Gnome is going way overboard with the "keep it simple" stuff. Eventually something happens that you didn't anticipate and you end up with "Run this via the cli" or "Sorry, that's impossible" as the answer which are both huge fails.

Can you select an output plugin? I don't have access to my Linux pidgin installs right now but I don't use Pulse audio and sound works IIRC. If you can choose the output method you could try ALSA direct.
