Pictures!

Don't be too attached (to the rats). The snake must eat. Also do not handle the rat(s) and then handle the python without washing your hands. If the rats crawl on your cloths then change your cloths and wash before handling the snake. Their teeth are strong and sharp enough to leave a mark and even puncture through a fingernail. Do not house them in the same room or in close proximity to each other.

Yeah I already mentioned that to my wife about handling the snake and playing with the rats.

The momma and poppa rat I dont mind getting to like, as it will be a while before Snakey is big enough to eat them. As for their babies, I think we will pick 2-4 of them to keep as pets at MOST.. the rest we will use as food for the snake. Im still trying to figure out how to stagger litters so that we can get the right size food at the right times... The snake is pretty long but not up to eating big stuff yet (maybe 3-4 week rats?)

Is this Royal Python a domestic or import?

Just be careful when handling the snake if the rats are even in the same house and remember.....If and when someone gets bitten, 99.9% of the time it was the handlers mistake.

The times I have been bitten were my own damn fault. Remember, if you live feed just because the snake has finished and the animal is no longer there, does not mean the scent of the feed animal is no longer present. Case in point: I fed a red-tail boa two very large old breeder rats. Two days later I went to clean the tank and with my hand slowly grabbed the shelter/house/cardboard box the snake was in. I was immediately struck (deep lacerations). The reason I was to find out was there was 2 drops of rat blood on the inside of the box. Snake felt vibration, smelled food (blood) and movement appeared = bite.

Ball Python aka royal right?

My friend bred it from an albino and hetero.

Ball Pythons are very very non-aggressive from what Ive been told/read. I plan on getting him onto frozen/thawed food if possible, but they can also be very finnicky eaters.

Edit: Right now im having trouble keeping him warm, i finally just put his aquarium in a half bathroom with a heater and keep it around 80-85 degrees with 60-70% humidity.

I dont have any material on top of the UTH other than care fresh substrate.... its not getting hot enough to burn but im thinking i might need to put something there in case it does.

Python regius = Royal Python aka. Ball Python

You are correct. The are very docile, but that does not mean they do not need to be treated with care.

I believe that properly fed and freshly killed feed animals are the best way to go. If you do decide to go frozen you will need to add vitamin supplements to the dead. IIRC it is vitamin A which breaks down very quickly and the snake normally gets this from the freshly killed feed animals gut contents. But not the case with frozen.

I used to own 4 of them (Royal Pythons). 2 were rescue snakes. Along with Northen Pine, Columbian Red Tails, and Rat snakes......had to feed them all so I had a breeding operation of rats and mice in the furnace room.

Ok, I bought a digital thermometer and hygrometer... and after a little bit of playing finally got a good temperature in the aquarium!

70% humidity, 80 on the cool 89-91 on the hot.
