I took the wife to Biltmore from Thursday to today for an anniversary. For those that don't know, it's a home built by one of the Vanderbilts in the late 19th century. It's very impressive in person, and the grounds around it are beautiful. I've toured a few dozen castles in my time, including Neuschwanstein, and I can honestly say this was one of the most impressive.

We stayed at the Inn, the only lodging on the estate itself. Great views, quiet and excellent service. They have a winery on the estate, and they have a reasonable selection of wines for the price.

Anyway, I won't bore you with the details. I'd recommend that you go if you haven't, and feel free to PM me if you want any tips.

The front of the house.

Another view from further back.

Same area. This shows some of the garden area, the ponds, etc.

Side view near the garden. This shows the stables on the far right.

This was our view from the Inn. It's not a great picture, but you can see Biltmore in the middle of the picture above the trees. All of this land is owned by descendants of the Vanderbilt family.

A view from inside the Inn.

Final view of Biltmore near the ponds.

Personally, I think the house itself is hideous, and assuming I had the money to build such a place, I would not want to live there.

Nor would I, but we're talking over a century ago. Most of the castles that I've seen aren't exactly cozy...

Looks cool. I want to check out some old castles sometime. They are neat.

I've been to Biltmore a few times, when I was younger.

But damn if the admission isn't kind of expensive.

It is cool, but we opted out of it when we in Asheville two weeks ago. No denying it is a fantastic estate.

Sure it is.

Castles are not just clunky stone buildings that King Arthur lived in.

Germany is full of similar looking Castles.

Yeah, it's pretty expensive. Everything around there was expensive. If I was going to do it again I'd do so far more economically.

I took the Behind-the-Scenes tour as well. That was really interesting. I got to see the organ room, the old boilers (one still usable), generators, butler's pantry, etc. Love the history of it.

More impressive than the house is the estate its on. Freaking HUUUGE plot of land and very nice land to boot. I thought the house was boring as hell. Maybe Im just not into those kinds of things?

It's a nice place, but for history I liked Williamsburg much better and for opulence, Windsor is hard to beat. We are originally from India and as we walked around the kitchens at Biltmore, we found it amusing that some of the archaic technology on display is still in use back in India :)
