Well, I chipped one of the memory chips on my X800 Pro AGP an hour ago putting my ATI Silencer back on. Which ATI card should I get?

Another X800 Pro NewEgg Link

An AGP X800XL NewEgg Link

The X800XL has VIVO which I like, plus it has the 4 more pixel pipelines and the increased memory clock. I could easily overclock it to (and even past) X800 Pro speeds.

Which one should I get?

Also would it be possible to hold ArcticCooling liable for the cracked X800 Pro? How should I go about that?

contact their support department, explain the situation but it seems to me its "user error". i would imagine they have some sort disclaimer about such things

Nope, followed the directions exactly. I twisted each screw one turn at a time and as I was doing it I heard a click and presumed it to be the screw, but when I powered on my computer the text was very wavy and there were vertical lines going down my screen. I saw the crack in the memory chip when I whiped the thermal grease off.

cant see much in that pic... i dont think a memory chip should crack if you are applying even pressure.... but i cannot see the extent of the crack... try talking to ati, even though you were changing hsf thus voiding the warranty it sounds like it woulda cracekd sooner or later...

i see now, well see what others say but i dont think it is very common for a memory chip to crack... i dont think it should do that, arent they like supported nicely by the board....

i've heard of messing up the gpu core due to bad hsf design but not this....

Exactly my point, I'm SOO pissed off right now. You know when you just want to go put your fist through a fu%%%%% wall?

I would appreciate it if someone could help me out with which video card to buy (and please back up your decision with facts) also about the memory chip incident.

X800XL 400mhz x 16 pipes = 6400 fillrate. Memory clocked at 980
X800Pro 475 x 12 pipes = 5700 fillrate. Memory clocked at 900.

Stock speeds thus x800xl is better.

Overclocked. Lets assume memories will overclock equally well.
X800XL gets to 430 often x 16 = 6880 fillrate.
X800Pro can get to 550 x 12 = 6600. But X800XL is almost guaranteed to work at 6400 out of the box and the memory will most likely overclock higher too.

Unless you were to get x800pro vivo and unlock 4 pipes, x800xl is a better value card.

Thanks! I will probably get the XL if nobody gives me a good reason for the X800 Pro. I can't get a VIVO on NewEgg anymore 🙁. Also sorry for topic title faking, but I am in a hurry a NEED this advice so I can get this thing ordered. Im on an integrated VIA UniChrome chip FFS feel some sympathy!

xl sounds good unlesss you're a risk take and would like to try to get the vivo pro and unlock it but oyu said you cant get teh vivo anymore so get the xl....

Heh, you are right on the spot with that one.

Did you ever think of seeing how much it'd cost to have ati repair your card? Must be less than $300.00...

Hmm, that could be an option

I'm sorry to hear about your video card. Get the XL - it's a no-brainer over the Pro.

As far as the misleading title... There are about a gazillion posts asking "which video card should I get?", and it is pretty common knowledge (to anyone who researched it a all) that the X800XL is the best bang for the buck high end video card right now. Your misleading title and lack of ability to do your own research only serve to cheapen the usefulness of this forum for the rest of us. Again, I'm sorry to hear about your video card, but please respect this forum by showing some etiquette.

i got a VIVO x800pro PCIe from new egg recently (4\5\05), and could not get it to unlock.... it does overclock excellently though.... 565\565 36C idle 65C load stock cooling....
