Picture of the ripping effect on a video card?

It's really hard to see from a still shot (since it only affects a few high-contrast pixels); the effect is MUCH worse in motion. It's very easy to reproduce, however: just run an older FPS (like half-life/counterstrike or quake3) at a very low resolution without vsync (and with framerate uncapped) and run around. You'll see what look like horizontal lines flickering across textures and object edges when anything is in motion. Some people don't care, but it drives me nuts.
 
tearing is not an effect your video card is creating... but what your monitor is displaying. The video card is doing everything it is supposed to, sending out full frames to the monitor. its when the monitor is caught mid refresh when the frme changes that you get tearing. You cannot screenshot it.

turn vsynch on.

 
Yeah, a framegrab from the videocard will always be one full framebuffer, where tearing is the result of the the framebuffer being swaped in the middle of the monitor's refresh. so you can't rightly get a framegrab to show tearing, but you can take two framegrabs and paste parrts of them together to simulate the effect, which looks like:

thats extremely exagerrated, it looks more like kinda miraging on the left and right of the screen, i do get it sometimes on CS: source, i run at 1280x960 16aa 6af (loves my vid ccard 😀)
