Picture File Extensions

NJLOAD

Senior member
I installed a trial version of Paint Shop Pro 7 and during the install process it changed all the extensions of my .jpg .gif files to the Paint Shop extension. I have removed Paint Shop from my system and it did not remove the extension from my pictures. How do I get them back to their original extensions? Now when I click on them I have to specify what program I need to open them.

Thanks
Dave

P.S. I am using Win2k

When you open a picture file hold down shift and right click. You should see a open with option, choose it. You will be prompted to choose which program you would like to use when opening picture files. There is a option that say Always you this program to open this type of file make sure it is checked. That way whateve program you choose will always be used for picture files.

If PSP just changed the extensions, you can change them back to what they used to be (.jpg) by renaming them. If PSP converted them to another format, that is another matter, and you will need to convert them back to .JPG again. There are a lot of graphics programs that will handle format conversions. One of the oldest and best is HiJaak Pro. PSP itself will do that.

I was surprised to hear that PSP 7 made file extension changes without your permission. I use PSP 5 and it has not done that. It uses what ever bitmap extension I tell it to. Is ver. 7 really a step up or a step back? 🙂

What Payjo cited was how to associate a given file extension with a program. That's good to know, but does not change the extension.

Dave,

PSP did not change any of your pictures. All it did was, when you installed it, change the default application (the application that gets run when you double click an icon or right-click and select Open) for certain extensions (*.GIF, *.JPG, etc.) to be PSP. This is the association (stored in the registry) between the program and the extension.

There is usually an install option to let you make the program the default or not, and for which extensions to do so...you may have missed it on one of the setup pages during installation. What is odd is that usually the uninstall will restore the old association.

Payjo's method of restoring the associations will work.

I wouldn't worry about the concerns corky-g raised, they won't apply in your case.
