I recently bought the Arctic Cooling VGA Silencer Rev. 3 for my Radeon 9700 pro. I hooked it up as per the instructions, making sure the screws were nice and tight. However, when I turn on my computer, everything would be fine for a while, but then the monitor would inexplicably go blank (the same thing that happens when you turn the monitor on without plugging it into the video card). I wonder if the cooler is connected properly. Here are some pics:

Sorry if the pics are a little blurry, but I think they're good enough.

Thanks!!

You may have to remove the shim from around the VPU to get solid contact between the core and heatsink.

Pull the heatsink off and see if there's a good impression of the core (thermal compound outline). If not then you'll probably need to do some shim surgery. If there is, then I don't know.

Did anybody else have to remove the shim? The instructions that came with the Silencer say nothing about this.

I did not remove the shim on my 9800Pro. The heatsink was already making good contact with the core (I removed it to make sure). I heard of some potential problems occuring when removing the shim, so IMO if it aint broke dont fix it.

I didn't remove the shim on my 9500 Pro, so I can't tell whats my temp. But by touching the card it's cooler then before so it worked.

Alright, thanks for the suggestions. I didn't think I spread the paste out over the VPU correctly when I installed the Silencer. I'm going to remove it now to see if the heatsink is touching.

I removed the Silencer and the heatsink does have an indentation of paste from the VGU. However, the indentation was that that "straight", so I added some paste and rescrewed the whole thing back together tightly. Hopefully, it'll work now. We'll see.
