Diseases

Opossums do not harbor diseases normally found in dogs and cats, such as distemper, parvovirus, or feline hepatitis. All warm-blooded mammals can contract rabies, but opossums are rarely found to be rabid. Scientists believe that a body temperature too low to support the rabies virus is the reason. According to Dr. Susan Jenkins, Assistant State Epidemiologist, Office of Epidemiology, Virginia Department of Health, six rabid opossum cases were reported between 1989 and 1998.
Taken from here

Are Opossums Rabid?: Opossums are not carriers of rabies, much like raccoons, fox, bats and skunks. There have been a few cases but it is VERY RARE that an opossum will ever have rabies.

Laugh it up. Then get a mad possum hissing and biting at you. Little critters are so stupid they can be nasty.

Believe it or not we have possums here in London, Ontario. I see them all the time. They are slow but can be dangerous when cornered. The best advice is to simply leave it alone and let it go about its business.

America's only marsupial.

Before I bought my house I lived in an apartment. I came home one night and there was an opossum sitting in front of my door. I tried to shoo it away but it wouldn't budge and was hissing and lunging at me. Sadly I didn't have my pistol in the car at the time so I couldn't just shoot the bastard. I picked up some rocks and tried to scare it away by tossing those at it but the damn thing wouldn't move. I finally found a loose piece of the fence and beat the opossum to death with it. Crazy bastards.....hate them almost as much as I do raccoons.

I haven't read through all the replies, so this might have been pointed out. lol But. . . The thing looks like it's droolin' in the last pic. heehee

My mom and I used to live in an apartment that was upstairs. We used to leave cat food out for one of our cats. Possums used to come and eat the food. They'd climb up two flights of stairs just to get to it. I would open the door and try to scare them and sometimes they were so frightened, they almost jumped the two stories. :Q

he/she is showing his teeth (lips pulled back/aka=salivating), in at least two of the pictures.
Dude, he's just smiling for the picture. Either that or because he's about to shoot lasers out of his eyes!

If you hurry and get your Pokeball, you might be able to catch it. ;)

We have those guys all around here (right on the NY/Ontario border)... Typically, they act like most other mammals. You mess with their kids and they get VERY aggressive. Though they are small, they can pretty easily take out cats and small dogs. However, if you do nothing to their kids (like you poking it) they typically get scared as hell and won't do much of anything (I wonder if thats how the whole possum playing dead legend came along?). Anyways, leave the little buzzard alone, but I'd try and leave the cats and dogs indoors for a bit.

Looks like an evil sod to me...

Any way you or anyone you know can trap it and release it outside?
Shinerburke et al will probably try and blast it, the round will rebound off the wall and get him instead... :D

Down my neck of the woods, the pests are foxes. They just stay about a carslength away from any human, but will walk around, scrabble in trashcans within broad view.
