More Charges for Accused Cat-Hoarder

By KPIX - The PIXPage Staff

Additional charges will be filed against a San Francisco woman accused of hoarding over 200 cats in her Petaluma home.

Police say Marilyn Barletta has hidden even more cats in her house since her first arrest.

Last May, animal control officials removed 230 cats from the home. Neighbors called authorities recently when they said they saw Barletta drop off more animals into the unoccupied house.

"It's animal abuse," said Mike Mullins, Sonoma County District Attorney. "Probably one of the worst cases I've ever seen."

Barletta is currently free on $10,000 dollars bail. She denies the charges of animal cruelty.

Not only that...how the hell do you "hide" 230 cats? I'd like to think I'd know my neighbor had a problem by the time she got to 50 or so

Not Guilty Plea for Woman with Hundreds of Cats

Whitney Gould
The San Francisco woman accused of allowing more than 200 cats to run wild in a Petaluma home has pleaded not guilty.

Marilyn Barletta was arraigned Monday morning on felony animal cruelty charges.

Animal control workers removed 215 cats ? many of them feral ? from Barletta's home last month. Her lawyer says Barletta was merely trying to protect the animals, and had their best interests at heart.

"Marilyn has been very caring, and she sees no ill will" said John LemMon, Barletta's attorney. "She doesn?t have an evil bone in her body." If convicted, Barletta could face up to three years behind bars.

Officials say about 20 of the cats that were seized have since died. The rest are still being evaluated, and will either be put up for adoption or destroyed.
