Pics of my son's pets - PET RATS!!!

Rats are lovely little pets. My mother was an elementary school math and science teacher, so I grew up with them. I even spent $30 putting one to sleep once... she was a dear friend and I didn't want her suffering.

Are rats easy to handle? I remember my Hamsters were great to handle and have as pets, but Gerbils were a b1tch. They would bite and and scurry off somewhere while my fat hamster just slept on my lap.

THey have never bit us - sweet and lovable.

Feeding - they eat what we eat - plus seeds and whole grain cereals. . .

Thats crazy! I want one. Are they like the bald cats named Spynxs? Where can I get one?

I got lucky and found mine at a pet store.

You just gotta call around and see if anyone has any baldies 😛

They are real soft and smooth - feels like human skin.

You have to really take care of em - they are naked - they get cold easily and will whine when cold, shiver, etc. . .

Yea I took a hamster back to the pet store cause it was so violent. . .

Gerbils are pretty docile though, if you want a smaller pet. Never was bit by my gerbils. . .

I have a rat story.
I was visiting my cousin some years ago (In high school at the time) and his girlfriend had a pet rat. We went over to her house and she has it out playing with it. She must have been able to tell i wasnt amused by the wrecthed creature so decided to "torment" me. She said "You should hold him!" and sets him on my lap. I dont move and just stare at the vile thing crawling around me. I can tell shes amused by my supposed fear of the creature.
Far from it.
She asks me "Whats wrong, you dont like him?"
I look her dead in the eye and say in a low, level tone
"No, I think hes fine. I'm just trying not to kill him seeing as I love to hunt rats"

I dont think I've ever seen someone move to get an animal as fast as she moved to get that rat off me. 😀

What about there sh1t? do they just go anywheree?

do they stink?

can it be trained to go in a litter box or something?

They go in one corner of the cage, and the pine bedding means no bad smell.

They only go in one corner of their cage.

Now if you keep em out an hour and ignore their pleadings to go back home, then yea. . .they will go anywhere.

There is not smell as long as the cage is changed every 4-5 days. . .

My son has them trained to come at their name call. We can sit them down in a room and let em wander 10 - 15 minutes under supervison, but when we call they come back (easily trained with treats). . .

I had a few rats and mice as pets, better than hamsters IMO, last one I had got a tumor and "pooped" on day all over the wall, I came in to see blood and it dead, was a sad day. 🙁

Omg so cute. I had one before. He was really smart. Why does one of your have no hair?

It is a genetic variation - aptly named bald rats 😛

My sister brought several rats home when she was in school. They were cute. I didn't know there were bald rats out there. 🙂
