Congrats on a nice car and those pics are great. I want one in orange or khaki. Do you find it to be underpowered at all? They are always beating this car up for not having the 2.5 liter. It is available with a diesel in other markets. They should have made that an option for us too.

How did you snap the shots off once you raised the GS4?

The GS4 has a 5 or 10 second timer. Set the timer, hit the shutter, lift camera, wait.

I can do the same with my Panasonic GH3. Since the GH3 also has WiFi, I can control it with my phone app and even see what it sees through remote video.

Passing people on the highway isn't an issue. It can also keep highway speeds just fine. It is most definitely not a peppy car though with the CVT.

I really wish we could get the deisel 6-speed manual. That would solve a lot of problems but of course the US market sucks. I can feel that it really lacks oomph at the lower RPMs like 1,900 rpm cruising on the highway at 65mph. To maintain 65mph it has to switch to a smaller gear and run at 2,300 rpm which decrease fuel economy by 10-15%. It you force it to stay in the highest gear at 65 it'll slowly slow down.

Thanks for sharing that Fuzzy, I am always looking for tips on stabilizing shots.

Me and video are having a fight right now, but I am going to win this! 🙂

What exactly do you mean by stabilizing shots? Video stabilization and photo stabilization can be two completely different animals. Video is much more complex.

Primarily video. Any tips or favorite websites?

I don't know what to get first or what I might use the most:

Jib, Slider, Dolly?

I am thinking of trying to make a homemade jib based on some articles I found.

What do you use for video with your GH3?

Oh GAWD, talk about a can of worms 😉

50% of video is just trying to figure out how to get the motion control down.

What kinds of movements are you looking to do? What subjects are you trying to film? What is your budget? Does the motion need to be only for a few feet or does it need to span across tens of feet or even a continuous shot? And what speed do you need the motion to be?

The problem with a lot of the motion control equipment is they're unitaskers. They either pan. Or slide. Or go super slow. Or go fast. Etc. Pretty soon you'll have a whole stable of different equipment just for getting a certain type of job.

We shoot real estate videos. Houses. Houses don't move.

We use a pocket motorized slider, a beefy video tripod and panning head, a smaller panning head for quick work, and a handheld glider/stabilizer. Once the technology matures, aerial multirotor helis may be in our future.

Look at the bright side. If you had the 5MT you'd probably be turning closer to 3000 at 70 mph (guesstimate). You can't have your cake and eat it too.

Then again, the CR-Z turns about 3k at highway speeds and gets over 40mpg (my driving).

So wait, I must have missed why you chose the CVT.

Huh?

The CVT gets better gas mileage than the manual. The tallest gear on the 5MT is too small and spins too fast. I know. The CVT can mimic the tallest gear ratio of the 5MT and when I do the mileage drops at least 10% from the taller gear the CVT is capable of.

Cool shots 🙂

Do you have any pics of the inside of your crosstrek?

For fun, tracking and following family and friends. I want to keep the first piece under 250. I want to be free of the tripod.

This..

a handheld glider/stabilizer..

What do you use for this? I think I need/want a stablizer first.

Thanks,

Brian

Excellent shots! Remember driving by the Great Salt Lake in August once. That mess stinks in the summer.

Did you cross shop between the Crosstrek and the Impreza? Are the differences between the two worth the $5k difference? Is the vehicle noisy on highways? Considering getting one.

Ah crap, sorry about the slow reply. ygpm.

I'll get some pics when the weather is better.

I didn't even look at the Impreza. Just doesn't have the ground clearance to warrant inspection and IMO having that low of a ground clearance on an AWD car basically says "I'm never actually going to go off the beaten path." This car isn't going to stay on pavement but it also isn't going on lifted-truck-4x4 terrain either, so the Crosstrek was perfect. The clearance has already paid off going down some forest roads and even on a dirt bike track that I found close to the salt flats, haha.

It is not noisy on highways.

if it's so cold that there's a permanent slab of ice at the gas station, how do you not freeze at night when sleeping in the car?

Beautiful pics!

Did you photoshop pic #2? Car looks clean there.

Thanks! Naw, that was right after the carwash.

I double up on two mummy sleeping bags - an old synthetic and a newer high performance down bag for backpacking. And I wear a beanie and of course a jacket and pants. Pretty toasty.
