This. I've wheeled with Libbys. They do fine for dirt trails, but the IFS makes them hard to lift to fit anything above 31's. All this talk of Jeeps is making me miss my YJ. Maybe I can talk my wife into letting me trade my truck in for a Rubicon. :)

I've pulled a few 4wd rigs out of situations with 2wd rigs. Some stuff you just gotta stay out of:)

Friend's brother couldn't pull us out in his jeep cherokee due to slushy traction. AAA towguy came and refused to try to tow us out because he was afraid of getting stuck himself. couple of hillbilly friends came by in a truck but encountered the same traction problem. now we're both just sleeping in this jeep in the middle of the woods waiting for another hillbilly friend with a F350 to come by in an hour. hopefully he can pull us out. we're both completely caked in mud as well as the jeep from trying to get ourselves out. did you know that jeeps don't come with tow hooks? the bread tastes good.

Jeeps come with tow hooks, but the Liberty is not a real Jeep...

What's with the stupid-ass American car names? It's called a Jeep Cherokee.

First off, its an american car thus the LIBERTY is its name, the rest of the world has yet to catch up.
Secondly the rest of the world is offending the Cherokee nation of native amercans by naming a vehicle after their proud tribe.

In Britain the Liberty is still called the Cherokee...

On my quad, which has a 3000# winch mounted on it, I carry:
Tow strap
Snatch Block
Fix A Flat (tires also have slime in them)
Tire plugs
12v air compressor
Spare belt (doesn't have a chain)
Tools
First Aid kit
Emergency Blanket
Fire starter
Warm clothing
Maps
GPS
Compass
Extra fuel
Flashlight
Hand gun

I also always have my cell phone with me and we always take food and drinks.

no tin foil hat?

The emergency blanket may be foil.

Thanks for repeating what I just said. When Jeep made the change from the XJ to the next gen body they changed the name in the US. The current "liberty" is not worthy of the cherokee name.

The jeep liberty can vary depending on selected features but they all are trail rated and should handle a little mud. Im curious as to how mud mud they got into.

I assume it has an automatic transmission as well ?
Bad idea for anything off road.

Depends. For rocks, I like an auto unless the gearing is really, really, really low. I've wheeled with both and an auto is easier when trying to pick out a tough line.

Autos have more torque. I've never been off-roading but that sounds like win for rocks.

They have less torque when you are stuck and can slip because of the torque converter, which a manual does not have.

In the rocks I'll take an auto over a manual any day. There's nothing like using 2 feet to manage 3 pedals when you're off camber and the jeep keeps on wanting to stall because how steep the climb is. Also, the slushbox can soak up some of the strain on your drivetrain.

In general in the rocks they're preferred but you really can't use them as well for a low gear hill descent.

Anyways, I think this must look something like this except with a liberty instead of a real jeep. The girl in the picture did it right in front of my apartment. She wasn't paying attention and hopped two wheels over the curb. She was just BARELY resting on the axle tubes. The sad thing is she didn't even have a clue how to put it in 4wd

To the OP. You were stupid to take a grocery getter out there, even more so to get it high centered, and incredibly stupid not to try stacking junk under the front wheels until they get grip. Get logs, boards, rocks, etc and start sticking them under the tires. While the undercarriage of the car is snagged you'll never get out.

Compared to the other vehicles in its class the trail rated version isn't bad. However, it doesn't hold a candle to the wrangler, the original cherokee, the grand cherokee with the offroad goodies, or even the (dare I say it) Hummer H3.

That vehicle isn't an embarrassment so the Cherokee nation doesn't mind if they use the name.

Let's give this guy credit, he delivers!

Gotta love the chunk of wood half the size of the tire jammed in there "for traction".

Don't laugh about that, that's actually not a bad idea as long as they did it on the other side too. Doing it on one side with a vehicle with open differentials will get you nowhere.

There's plenty of other reasons to mock them, including their excuse for going out, driving a vehicle down a trail it wasn't up for, and doing it when it was so dark they didn't see the gigantic mud hole that could swallow their vehicle.

There is nothing on the other side.

Also, I would go for something a little smaller, that the tire has a reasonable chance of actually gripping. Those tires have too little tread to claw their way onto that piece of wood, particularly when everything is mudded up like that. If he had knobbier tires, sure.

Even with the tires they have beam > mud. I didn't notice they didn't have anything on the other side. I guess you can harass them about too.

Notice that my liberty does in fact have tow hooks. Stop spreading misinformation, fuzzybabybunny.

Okay, here's another of me going over some train tracks. Note, for you Wrangler humpers, the libby did this fine while a YJ needed some extra wood to help with clearance so the skidplate didn't get hung up on the rails

Pic3

Oh and... obligatory "That's not a mud hole, THIS is a mud hole..."

Took me 3 weeks to get this all clean

Car wash, anyone?

Tow hooks are optional equipment

They're part of an offroad package, not everybody ordered them so not all liberties have them.

So whose fault is it that the Liberty didn't have tow hooks when they took it off road? Not Jeep's. Who ever bought that Liberty obviously went on the cheap. It doesn't even have tinted rear windows which is a tell tale sign of a base Liberty.
