Bad idea for anything off road.

Depends. For rocks, I like an auto unless the gearing is really, really, really low. I've wheeled with both and an auto is easier when trying to pick out a tough line.

Except that when you are in mud the automatic can't be easily rocked out like a manual.

Autos have more torque. I've never been off-roading but that sounds like win for rocks.

They have less torque when you are stuck and can slip because of the torque converter, which a manual does not have.

But in the mud, you don't need to pick a line, really. Just mash the throttle and hope for the best. I've found that the best thing for mudding is a winch. Transmission type isn't going to matter much if you're buried up to the axles.

I have a 99 Sahara sitting on 33" MT's with a 3.5" lift and a 1.25" BL. And it's an auto. I take it out on serious trails in the mountains in PA and the Pine Barrens in NJ about once a month. An auto is much, much easier to run offroad. I've gone up and down 70+ degree mud hills and crawled fields of rocks that are difficult to even walk across. Friends of mine have burned clutches (plural) doing the same and swear they are getting an auto next time.

Oh and OP is a fucking retard for leaving pavement without another vehicle capable of pulling him out and I won't even mention anything about a Liberty.

This thread has so much win, I think I need a change of underwear. Fuzzy (*snorgle* poof!) goes out for bread at 3 am, as people are wont to do, then goes off-roading in a Jeep Liberty, which is, as we all know, the ideal vehicle to go off-roading in on those middle-of-the-night bread runs. Good Lord... I'm pretty sure there are laws about threads like these (it's killing my productivity).

Wow, if people had a little bit of a clue, they'd know that the Jeep Liberty is actually a pretty good off-roading vehicle.

Which explains why they got stuck in the mud, right? ;)

 And so did all the other 4x4 vehicles that tried to assist.

Do a little google search.

The Liberty is on the same level as every other 4wd vehicle with open diffs and IFS. It's not bad, but it's not that great, either.

A stock Jeep Liberty is anything but. Retards who drop twenty grand in suspension, tires, and electronics to make a Liberty good for off-roading are complete tools. Spend money on a real off-road vehicle.

Most of the built up Liberty's are so heavily modified they cannot even be called a Liberty anymore. Thats definately not legit.

I've seen a lot of solid axle swaps on them. It's like the people who throw thousands at a Civic. ;)

Fuck, at work and I can't stop laughing.

This whole story would make sense with the addition of ten simple words:

At worst (unless the auto has taller gear ratios) it has the same torque as a manual. The TC has a one way clutch, it can't slip "backwards".

Actually we buy Wranglers.

Only women are stupid enough to buy a Liberty.
