No, those were probably just transfers between stages....part of the reason rally cars have to be street legal is that you'll often drive yourself from one stage to the next. Racing is on closed roadways (usually gravel, but sometimes tarmac).

But they do block off normal streets for certain legs of the races don't they?

 
they have to get to the next trail or to the service area thru normal roads.

we met a few rally cars on the road... and tried to race them on a Volvo S60.... u know how it went 🙂

Depends on the rally. Some are all on gravel roads, others are a mix, some are mostly tarmac, but yeah, they're regular roads that they just close off for the race.

yeap... some roads r blocked and i think they are called access road.... u need a rally pass (cost me 300 SEK) to drive/walk near all the stages.
 
Racing in that snow has to take insane driving skills. They're probably blasting down those roads at what? 90-110 MPH?
 
Rally is so cool. It's a shame that they don't have it in the US to such a degree as in Europe. I suppose that given the end to end design of the courses it's not as compatible with TV.

There are quite a few of these races (tho not WRC 🙁 ) here in the states if you guys ever want to go check it out. It's quite a sight to see a car rocketing down a dirt road at 100+.

what i like is the people that stand right at the edge of the road as a 3000 lb car comes roaring at them on the edge of control.

It happens. I've seen some nasty car/spectator encounters in WRC coverage. Stupid people standing on the OUTSIDE of a corner.

we had to jump off the road into the snow when those cars rushed to the next stage.... it's kinda funny when u got honk'ed by a rally car.

there r alot of EVO's...i would say majority of the cars i've seen there is EVO. however, i couldn't find Mitsubishi's big camp in the service are... only Citroen, Subaru, Ford, Peugeot, Skoda and Hyundai r in the main area.... kinda weird.
