I thought the Core 2 Duo retail box HSF was identical to that of previous Pentium D series, but there are slight differences. I've got some pictures for your viewing pleasure.

Check the fins. Also notice the new one's TIM pad design.

Either way, you're best served by avoiding these like plague. :)

Oh please.. the retail HSF does fine if you don't overclock. And guess what? Most people don't.

Read Anandtech's article about overclocking the E6300 and E6400. He got about 730MHz on the E6300 and about 750MHz on the E6400 with the stock cooler! Stop spreading all this nonsense, there is nothing wrong with the stock heatsink.

The OEM HSF is fine in the vast majority of applications. My Pressler stays in the high 30's low 40's with this heatsink even when the CPU is OC'd to over 4ghz.

It also becomes quiet when Qfan is enabled in the BIOS.

Yes, there are much better HSF's out there but the OEM HSF is far from garbage. Do you really think Intel would provide a 3 yr warranty and include a HSF that didn't adequately cool the CPU? I think you're brainwashed by the aftermarket HSF manufacturers.

Hah, he may not have looked at those pics, Zeke. If he had, he would have realized that my 12 year old daughter could have made a much better heatsink with my hand tools.

I always wanted to make my own heat sink......

I could make a better heatsink out of a flamethrower, 17 tooth picks, and some duct tape.

First I have to be honest that the Intel HSF is decent, you can even overclock a little on them. However, they aren't great and they are really noisy unless you have something like your motherboard undervolt them. Considering that they produce these things by the millions every year and have been doing it for years I would expect a better product. NewEgg has a significantly better heatsink that (when in stock) goes for $7.99.

Secondly, you guys watch way too much MacGyver...

There is no such thing as too much MacGyver, and with 4 rubber bands, a folding chair, and a dave matthews cd I can prove it.

If you want a conspiracy look no further than thermal pastes. Have you noticed that even the best, most expensive motherboards use crappy thermal paste thus forcing us to pay for Artic Silver 5 at the expensive retail rates rather than the pennies per ounce a major distributor would pay. I think that they refuse to sell it to the manufacturers. /paranoia

You could buy some OCZ paste. Does the job damn spiffy if you ask me. And its only made from 10% children's souls unlike the 30 to 40 percent those evil established paste companies use.

That might have been true with Netburst based chips, but not for these.

As someone mentioned, people have been getting good O/Cing results using the stock HSF.
