From now on whenever I take pic's I'm going to concentrate extra hard on coming up with some crazy wacked out stance. Afterall, maybe it is simply a good technique to get your subject to smile.

I think the main purpose of those odd picture stances are to the fact that they are usually vacationing and are trying to get pictures of the background as well. The wide legged stance is to obtain better balance to avoid blurry pictures.
I don't understand what the purposes of the stances are for, however I do agree seeing tourists of all races perform those stances.
