My girlfriend has a '97 Ford Ranger. Nice little trucks. No problems other than a broken dome light cover. It runs great and I don't see why it shouldn't for a long time. I'm looking for a new car myself... i'm narrowing it down between an Audi S4 and a 93-94 Corvette.

You can get a good condition Toyota Tacoma or Nissan Truck for that much..
If you check on cars.com, You can find one. But they're usually sold by the time it's posted on there..

Maybe you should lower the initial price to $3,000 and count on putting a couple thousand in during the first two years. They're always going to need some kind of repairs at that age. Put some good tires on it (Michelin), tighten up the front end and align it. Do the brakes for sure. It will need a battery and exhaust soon enough. The air might need leaks repaired too. If there's money left after that, touch up the body. That ought to be safe & sound and last you for a while when you're all done.

I'm thinking of going the same route for my son's first car/ truck. It will be a full size V8, automatic and most likely Ford since I've had great luck with mine. The Fords purchased at the shop I work at each went over 200K during the 80s and early 90s. I'll be talking to my mechanic about how the different engines and trannies held up for that vintage first.

I just bought a 2wd 2.4l 5-speed 93 Nissian with 100k miles 2 months ago for $3,000 and love it. $3000 is more than I think it was worth but they are a pain in the butt to find around here in decent shape. Make sure you check the frame out for rust mainly around the back also check the bed. Those things rust like a mofo.
